Agreed now given the lack of time l have now to mess around with any bike, and Tridents needed/need a lot of TLC. Shame Triumph haven’t done a classic T160 lookalike with the Vetter inspired tank and maybe a tuned for torque 1050 motor. current triples seem almost soulless in comparison to the old!

My brothers original T160 had the elegant 4.5 gal burgundy tank with white flashes, CMA cast wheels, twin Lockheed’s, Hyde clutch, mushroom tappets, chrome valves, Rita ignition, reverse cone Mega ‘mufflers’, etc, etc. Bottom end actually assembled by Les Williams. I still have a cassette recording of it accelerating away and all the way to the nearest roundabout 1.5 miles away!

I recently sold an early T150 and it did sound lovely.

My suggestion that Triumph modify a 1050 motor for a T160 lookalike needs qualifying a tad.

To get the authentic Trident feel it would need ‘detuning’ with smaller bores, eg using Hinkley Trident 76mm pistons and heads to make a 972, and an increased mass crank.
Tridents were more lusty than torquey with a steady gathering of energy as revs climbed from what was a weighty package. However, back then we probably had more space to pass cars in long gentle sweeps rather than rapid jumps like today!
Triumph did experiment with an 80mm stroked Trident to make an 846cc Thunderbird 3. Although one test rider from the 70s thought that the 71 x 75mm 891cc engine they tried was the sweetest of them all. If only!

I agree with the liking the look but want modern reliability etc. I love the look of the old stuff but happily I’ve never enjoyed/endured the old crap brakes, oil leaks and other associated joys of ‘classics’.

Nice that they bring joy to folk though

By contrast I was looking at a new KTM 890 today at £10,300 - gorgeous and a fantastic ride. I know where I’d rather put my 10k

I really like that style - reminds me of my old Hypermotard 1100S. I loved that bike and really miss it.

We have a KTM 390 which is the same style as the 890 and is great fun to ride.

I’ve just renewed the Street Triple so it’ll be another few years before I change it but top of my list is the 890. By the time I’m ready to change it’ll have been around a while and any problems sorted plus loads of second hand tricked up ones available

I’m very pleased with the Street it’s an amazing bike - by far the best real world bike I’ve ever owned. Having said that, I will be taking the 890 for a test ride
