The same could be said for modern bikes and Buell's, the older ones of anything these days have more character than the modern , built DOWN to a price versions produced today , or am I just getting :old:

TBH I think you're just getting old lOl I think you're right about the character, but I think it's a euphemism for unreliability more than anything else. The lack of character is down to increased quality, reliability and regulations. Once you've removed the regulatory bits and bobs the character goes up, with a corresponding decrease in reliability.

If you were going for a long group ride 30 years ago a lot of riders would be carrying tool kits. These tool kits would mostly be required for the inevitable breakdowns of those who weren't carrying tool kits.

These days nobody carries a toolkit, and, generally speaking, nobody breaks down. (apart from the odd idiot on a Buell or an old british bike). On the downside, if a modern bike does break down, a tool kit probably wouldn't help, that's what the AA are for :P

Excuse me if l speak out of turn, but some of you may have missed the pun. ;)

A1 Tornado is a brand new steam engine reproduced from a 1920/30s design. A sort of improved Flying Scotsman by one of Gresley’s successors. Currently the only loco permitted to do 100mph on UK tracks because it IS brand new!

The ‘Duke’ of Gloucester is something different. Built in 1954 it was an enlarged Standard Britannia class, but with shaft driven cam boxes operating poppet valves similar to an internal combustion engine like a Ducati (the cams and followers even look a bit like a Desmo in section, but aren’t).
The Duke had the most efficient steam cylinders of any loco on test, but as built in ‘54 had badly matched exhaust blast pipes (shades of my XB9 headers lOl ) and was not a resounding success.
However, during restoration in the 80s they optimised the exhausts and made the Duke what it should have been. ;)

If you are lucky enough to travel behind this engine on the main line, you will experience something special. When driven well at speed it sounds a bit like a class 47 diesel, and will out perform one at times, eating gradients like they aren’t there. There was talk of optimising the cam profiles (softening them), which would improve cylinder filling even more.

The ‘Duke’, Older than Tornado, but more modern, combining old a new tech.......a bit like our Bulls? 8-)
