So did it reflect the sound into a receiver that then presented it as sound?

Yes, they had Wardens stationed to listen for the very noisy motors that airships used. They used exactly the same parabolic principles as radio/radar receivers, just with a microphone.

Interesting how that one has fallen into the sea and half disintegrated after such a short time.

Me old mum lives by the sea and refuses to move as she likes the view and the breeze blah blah...clip shows some recent high seas and the houses on the seafront, that are no longer insurable :cry:

Ma's house is on the opposite side of the road from the sea, next to the shop, at 1 minute.

I can see a market here for sound reflecting concrete fence panels :D Then if you have noisy neighbours have slot in concave concrete fence panels facing them so that they get all their own noise back 8-)
