I have.....once used a Boots (the chemists) German lager kit, but instead of using recommended amount of white sugar I doubled the amount with muscovado....took longer to brew out, looked like a stout, tasted like a lager and kicked like a fuckin mule! ;) lOl
The secret to a good home brew is conditioning

Norrie makes a good brew, mind you, he needs to living where he does.
Makes FowieFest a worthwhile visit.

That was exactly my dad's and my first experience, circa 1983. Had this silly little plastic beer barrel in it to serve out of. Can't remember well enough if it tasted any good but we decided that it seemed easy enough that we should try other recipes. We graduated up to better, but still low tech, equipment after that and he was making lagers and I was making stouts and porters. Thing is, mine were so heavy and filling that I could only get through one 20 oz bottle a night. Good alcohol content though so I could still feel good with only one and I probably only made one bad batch in a whole decade. If we learned anything, it was that properly sterilized equipment was key, no matter how simple or complex of a setup. That was the difference between success and failure. Oh, and don't use too much sugar. Boom!!!

Alpine pop bottles (screw top) were the best I used until I invested in a Rotokeg

sort of logical , they sell more beer than cognac
so more money in the governments purse..
