If we're going down the line of removing statues because it offends one beliefs regarding slavery
How long will Wilberforce stand in Hull
Will Wilber be forced to stand down?
Sorry l couldn’t resist.
I watched, or rather endured some right on journalists today on current affairs progs. If they get their way in applying retrospective morality to all our historic figures, there is a danger of condemning people whose only crime was to be born and raised in a less enlightened place and time.
They are also having a go at our imperialist colonial past. Every successful nation state that developed the power went through it’s own period of exploration, colonisation then domination. We were just a bit better at doing it until WW2. Now they want us to get on our knees and grovel to the world for our past sins? What do they expect us to do? Pay reparations to all countries we colonised? Most of those countries are in a better state than we are.
Sure bad mistakes and atrocities took place, but some countries were not even nation states prior to colonisation. Others benefitted and took much of their identity from our colonial past and wouldn’t want to change now. Who exactly in our society do they expect to take the rap for all these alleged crimes against humanity???
Taken to it’s logical extremes there won’t be a statue or monument left standing in Old Blighty for fear of offending someone. Tourists might then choose to stop coming here, and many people from ethnic groups who came here to share our wealth, escape poverty or persecution and work in our heritage and hospitality industry will be out of work.
