Not sure if anyone here has had experience or even keeps homing/racing pigeons?

We had a stray racing pigeon arrive here with us in Pembrokeshire about a week ago. I managed to catch it, noted its numbers and emailed the relevant racing association. I was surprised, in this day and age of data protection, but when they replied they gave me the owner’s name and telephone number.

It transpires it was released about 10 miles away as the crow flies (pun intended) and was destined to return to Tandragee in Northern Ireland about 200 miles away directly.

The owner suggested that if we could catch it again, to take it some distance away and release it with the intention of it heading back to the owner. So, this morning Mrs Dusty caught it, and we drove 12 miles away the top of The Presell Hills, pointed it towards the Irish Sea, and released it.

Driving back, I will admit to feeling slightly sad and apprehensive for the creature.

5 minutes after arriving back, so did the Pigeon demanding it’s lunch! :o

The rules and regulations of the society that the owner belongs to are rather sniffy.

If a "non fancier" reports the stray officially, the owner has a written warning to arrange collection of the bird within 48 hours. If they fail to do so, the Chief Executive of the society can arrange collection to their headquarters at the owner's cost

I am certainly not going down that road.

Shameless hijack, but I am plagued by a family of wood pigeons, we have quite a few very mature trees in and around our back garden and the buggers nest every year and whilst grazing on all the young shoots and berries they shit everywhere, I kid you not some of the dollops are bigger than the dogs, it's s pita when the grandkids have it on their bare feet and pisses me off when I walk it into the house myself  my missus won't let me shoot them  so I've taken to using a catapult with non lethal mud balls not that I'm a great shot but it's kinda fun trying :oooops: , I've got a really good laser pen too which they don't like shone directly in their eyes....... anymore suggestions ?
