Hi all, a friend has been busy modifying a Aprilia RS 50 for racing. He let me have a blast up & down his road. Memories of the 70s came flooding back. There's just something satisfying about thrashing a tiny engine to the redline in every gear. Speaking to him he's hoping to get about 75mph ! But apparently it's very popular in the Netherlands and eastern European countries. They still race Kriedlers & Tomos bikes achieving speeds in excess of 90mph. I started to watch YouTube videos of the races & also 80cc enduro bikes. Very entertaining. My favourite was a 50cc triple water cooled Suzuki with 14 gears and a 18,000 rmp redline. 18,000 revs and a useable power and of around 1500 doesn't make for a relaxed ride. Bloody brilliant. I can see myself hunting down an old Puch or something. Mind you it won't be a FS1e or AP they are silly money.

To get real power out of a 'ped, you really need to start with a watercooled 2 stroke. The Yamaha Xerox is a good base, there's loads of tuning parts available and they're really cheap. A new big carb for mine cost £20 and it's bigger than the carb on my Bantam Trials bike! With such a narrow power band, the secret is tuning the auto transmission to keep the motor in a very narrow power band.

Thanks Adam, I think I'll be going the geared route & yes probably water cooled. Something like a Derbi, Reiki or Aprilia. Not sure about styling is, enduro or road chassis. Tuning wise maybe a 70cc big bore kit. These kits from the likes of Molessi seem very popular abroad. Not sure when this will happen. I've only just percured a jelopy of a Rover to mess with. First world problems eh !
