Hawkwind - 'The Road to Utopia'. CDBRED730 - Cherry Red Records 2018

No video or music feed yet to share here as far as I can tell. :? There is also a associated article and interview in the latest 'Prog' Magazine.

Claimed to be a classical version of some Hawkwind numbers. Produced by Hawkwind's Dave Brock with a certain Mike Batt who had something to do with the Wombles apparently. It even got a mention by John Suchet on Classic FM! I hear a few additional strings or wind instruments, but it sounds a bit like someone is taking the 'wind' away from the Hawk! lOl

I wonder if the band have forgotten how acoustic some of the original numbers were on record as they seem to be just different rather than in a classical mould. A bit less spacy would be a better description. Back in the early 70s Brock's guitar strumming alone sounded like he was far away in interstellar space on another spiral arm of our galaxy, even if some added effects by Dikmik and Del Detmar made it more 'out there'. 8-) 'We took the Wrong Step....' and 'Down Through the Night' were originally very acoustic sounding (or electric rhythm guitars strummed like an acoustic), but were part of a suite of heavily spaced out grungy tracks on 'In Search of Space' and 'Doremi Faso Latido'. They sound a bit out of context here.

Then there is a guest appearance by Brock's old friend Eric Clapton on Track 2  , but it sounds like Clapton does Clapton rather than Hawkwind on here. Does he ever change his tune?

My favourites are tracks 3, 6, 8 or was it 9.

Interesting and also available on limited release vinyl, but probably only for diehard fans and collectors? :old:

I gave up on them when Levitation came out, still listen to the old ones though :P

I still enjoyed ‘Distant Horizons’ from 1997? CD only, but still acceptably dynamic. Coincidently the last ‘great gig’ they did to my mind was at the Wyvern Theatre in Swindon that year when it all seemed to gel. ;)

Recent records just sound so compressed as well as messy in composition. Auto-tune may help them keep better time! Something they were probably made to use on Road to Utopia!

It’s a sobering thought? Even though we usually only hear one side of a story in band bust ups, to think that some of those creative souls we admired for so many years.......
........might just be a bunch of assholes! lOl

Most are. Even happens on the local scene. Buckingham was the first to leave on his own accord due to creative differences and the power struggle that came from it. Despite Mick Fleetwood owning the name, it was always assumed that Buckingham was the creative leader and visionary. But truthfully, Lindsey is not so much an egomaniac as he is a perfectionist that makes working with him a bear. Others like him would be Tom Scholz of Boston and Billy Joel. The gig is good if you can handle the emotional demands.

If it's true that Nicks is the instigator, she should really count her lucky stars that she's even where she is today because of Buckingham insisting she come along for the ride. She's unique, but that voice is as horrible and incoherent as Bob Dylan's. The only reason she got to have a solo career, IMO, is due to fame that was gifted to her from being negotiated into FM. Bucky is the one with the talent. And Bob Welch (RIP) before him, who actually worked his ass off to save the band from extinction. Mick and John certainly didn't have what it took on their own as they're only marginally talented enough to hold down the rhythm section, even after 50 years of practice. Albatross certainly wasn't enough to keep them going this long, especially without an audience who's no longer on LSD.

I've been on an old Genesis kick personally. Wearing out my Nursery Cryme vinyl. I really need to get that on CD and the other Gabriel era stuff so I can burn it and be more mobile.

Good read X1. Ever considered being a Rock journo? ;)

I transfer my LPs and CDs onto cassette to play in my car. My Clio was last model fitted with a tape player, and it was a good one! I have a matching Renault Disc spinner, but with a large tape collection l feel no need to swap! 8-)
