Hawkwind - 'The Road to Utopia'. CDBRED730 - Cherry Red Records 2018
No video or music feed yet to share here as far as I can tell.
There is also a associated article and interview in the latest 'Prog' Magazine.
Claimed to be a classical version of some Hawkwind numbers. Produced by Hawkwind's Dave Brock with a certain Mike Batt who had something to do with the Wombles apparently. It even got a mention by John Suchet on Classic FM! I hear a few additional strings or wind instruments, but it sounds a bit like someone is taking the 'wind' away from the Hawk!
I wonder if the band have forgotten how acoustic some of the original numbers were on record as they seem to be just different rather than in a classical mould. A bit less spacy would be a better description. Back in the early 70s Brock's guitar strumming alone sounded like he was far away in interstellar space on another spiral arm of our galaxy, even if some added effects by Dikmik and Del Detmar made it more 'out there'.
'We took the Wrong Step....' and 'Down Through the Night' were originally very acoustic sounding (or electric rhythm guitars strummed like an acoustic), but were part of a suite of heavily spaced out grungy tracks on 'In Search of Space' and 'Doremi Faso Latido'. They sound a bit out of context here.
Then there is a guest appearance by Brock's old friend Eric Clapton on Track 2
, but it sounds like Clapton does Clapton rather than Hawkwind on here. Does he ever change his tune?
My favourites are tracks 3, 6, 8 or was it 9.
Interesting and also available on limited release vinyl, but probably only for diehard fans and collectors?
