Turned out he had shit the rear wheel bearings. Lost a day or 2 from his trip and the bill from the random bike shop in Switzerland was about 500 chf (£400)... Bearings are about £40 or £50 I think.
If you scan the old posts on this forum about uly and other XBs you'll find threads of bearings being found to be on their way out, when changed at 10k...
Like you say, you got a good deal so there should be money in the biscuit tin for essentials... 17k miles warrants the essentials. Take it to the emporium, he is faster than others and cheaper hourly rate too
