I've again been looking at the air flow on my 1125r & got to admit that I am astounded by the lack of heat dissipation & cooling on this particular model.
For a start, the rear exhaust runs under the frame/tank cross member clearing this by about 25mm, it also only clears the right side member by 5mm. The rear cylinder head clears both the right & left side frame members by 10mm either side which turns the frame into a radiator. Now this is ok if the frame can cool enough by having plenty air pushed over the cylinder heads & down the inside of the frame. Unfortunately the Ram air ducting system (which only ever comes into effect over 120+mph) effectively blocks air from getting there. The air that is pushed over the engine mainly comes from gap between & the radiator cowls which works ok. At speed, but means as soon as the engine is hot this air is warmed through by the radiators which means instead of cold air for cooling (and Induction if you have the standard air box set up) you get hot air especially if the fans are running (IE in traffic). One bonus is the cowl design which pulls air over the outside surface & onto the frame & Engine which helps. The frame heat also causes petrol to leak out of the tank overflow onto the road, sometimes in front of your rear tyre when left hand cornering if you're unlucky.
The other problem is exiting any hot air (thanks Al1125r).
The problems here are the same Frame/Tank cross member that is being heated by the rear exhaust blocks the air exit. The shock absorber & it's oil chamber which is already being heated by the rear cylinder head with no shield & is bolted directly to the right side frame member also blocks air exit & it gets hot. The seat undertray design effectively directs air down the rear shocker & acts as a buffer to guide hot air down onto the swingarm.
My engine can go from 75 degree to 87 & above whilst in slow moving traffic. My engine also hates being above 80 degrees.
I'm in the process of resolving these issues, some of you have already scoffed at my removal of the useless ram air system, I can't wait to hear what you have to say about my new mods heh heh. I'll post pics when I'm done.

Jazzy, mines at 20+ thousand miles and there have been problems of course, but never overheating, even in a Brighton traffic jam in 30+ degrees...

What problems do you have above 80??

I think that's a prerequisite for Buell ownership, With 2 I am an example. With 7... *cough cough*

Just to define "overheating",in the car world I believe it is around 120 degrees C. Presuming the correct mix of water and antifreeze and a pressurised system with no leaks.
So an indicated temp of 95 C in traffic jams shouldn't be an issue......however I get anxious when mine rises probably as it seems to escalate in a short time and a certain amount of mechanical sympathy kicks in with all those hot metal bits relying on a thin film of hot oil for their life...having said that it soon drops to "normal" levels once moving and air flow increases.
Maybe JB is trying to slow down that rise of temps when stationary?
