| Post subject: | S1 Steering damper recommendation |
Just to ask what steering dampers have people fitted to their S1's, I was looking at fitting an ohlins but it seems to be tricky locating a fitting kit has anyone any recommendations of dampers and fitting kits, or can it be fitted with the universal mountings? |

I had one in a bunch of stuff i bought and sold it as didn`t want it. Have only had one moment while riding which damper may have helped. |

Thanks but i just fancied a steering damper people fit a lot of bits to their bikes that they dont really need personal choice, I was going to fit an Ohlins use a standard front clamp and maybe make a rear one to suit if anyone has any one has done anything like this before, if they have any pictures. also is it a 120 or 140 travel that is normally fitted. |

I think you're asking in the wrong forum. Most of us here know that the only thing a steering damper will add to your bike is weight. There's likely to be far more useful things to spend your money on. |

Point taken, i have been getting on with more useful upgrades, I have a Lucky hands oil pump gear to fit, an upgraded tensioner , and my seat is away getting reworked, I also have an X1 swingarm to fit and a mod to my exhaust to facilitate the new front mount I got for it ,all before the Summer once I finish my Z1300 so I have plenty to be getting on with.

There you go then. If you haven't already, spend the damper money on new isolators and new cycle parts bearings throughout while you are doing the other stuff. Then, you really don't need a damper because everything will be in good nick. |

My S1 has a damper fitted but only because it was on when I bought it , not sure what make it is though. |

The S1 simply doesn't need one. Nor does the XB S/R. I've had the XB kick back once in years clipping a cat's eye on a bend whilst gassing it hard. Never ever had the S1 shake it's head whilst riding it spiritidly. |

This one here has one fitted, I have a 55mm fork bracket off my 1125r if that's the same size, you're welcome to it. I didn't bother in the end as the bearings (like most people have already confirmed) will usually sort it. Thanks for the offer but I think the steering damper idea has been canceled due to popular opinion that I am wasting my time, incidentally I checked the forks and they are tapered , they start at 54mm bellow the yoke and go down to about 51 mm which is probably 2" just above the seal. |

Ogri, while I have a Ohlins knock-off damper that came with my X1, I've removed it to make room for mounting the shock reservoir for my Penske. Mine was mounted to the tube that would normally be an aftermarket brace for the S1 since that tube doesn't exist on the S1 frame. I've found that the reasons for really needing a steering damper are poor steering geometry or improperly adjusted forks. Long travel bikes like a GS Adv or Stelvio NTX and all enduro bikes are more susceptible to headshake when trying to balance on and off road manners. Try for the best road manners and it sucks off road, pushing everywhere; try for best control and tracking off road and you'll get thrown from head shake at road speeds. Even trying for cushy comfort on the road on an adv bike can introduce headshake as it's too soft to also have solid steering control. The geometry is fine on the S1. I've raced one years ago. No damper needed at any speed with it adjusted properly. The fork's damping should be sporty, not soft. If your adjusters can't achieve this, you may need to play with fork oil height or find an oil with intermediate weight. I believe the S1 uses 5w fork oil. Typically you find 10w next, but companies like Race Tech also have 7.5w. |
