Just found that I have been running my XB12 for a few months with low engine oil. I have only covered a few hundred miles. I only completed a service on my bike in July where I replaced the oil and filter as per the service book and I filled up the oil with a little more than the required amount. I didn't bother checking the oil as I put more than the correct amount in. Anyway, thought I'd have a bit of a car / bike day the other day and I checked the oil on my bike after a short ride around town. The engine was at normal operating temp, the bike was on the side stand and on level surface. I checked the dipstick and saw there was no oil on it at all I was a bit shocked and topped it up as required, putting about 400ml more in. This probably explains why the bike was running hot and the fan was coming on at 60-70mph. This seems to have gone now the bike has more oil. I have done the same in the past and the oil has been fine! I'm just wondering what potential damage has been caused and if I need to be on the look out for anything? Cheers, |

As long as the oil light didn't come on, it wouldn't bother me too much. I'd learn from the lesson and checkbthe oil more frequently. |

Im not familiar with the XB12s, but do you check oil levels with the bike on the stand? |

personally I check mine after every ride when I get back home , everthings up to temp if you ran it that low the cooling fan was on a lot, then the oil what oil you did have was getting very hot , and it was unable to carry out one of its secondary functions Cooling , thankfully the oil warning light did not come on , so lubrication was still being applied . if it were me I would change the oil again , and check and recheck when hot and on the side stand just after its turned off . Oil is cheap an engine rebuild is not . |

Have agree with Barney, an oil change will do no harm. |
