I should add - Note - We are all running race cans, K&N air filters and Buell race ECUs to cope with the wider range of electronic sensor inputs.

What do you mean by wider range?

I have always assumed that the race ECU is designed to cope with a wider range of voltage inputs from the various sensors that it is designed to take readings from than the standard ECU can cope with and thus output the appropriate instructions to the electronics controlling the ignition and fuel systems.

I have never taken my engine to anything like it's BHP and/or RPM limits and
further assume that the standard X1 sensors feeding into the ECU produced different outputs ( which the standard ECU wasn't designed to cope with ) when my free flowing air intake and exhaust components were installed because, like I said, resetting the standard ECU with a Scanalyser didn't cure the initial rough running problems whereas fitting the race ECU did and this was the advice of the HD dealer's spanner men at the time.

I don't think at the time that the scanalizer was able to remap the ecu as such ..........it could update all but the very first ecu's I believe with small tweeks but would not have been able to install race maps in a standard ecu as Harley wanted to sell the customer a new one to go with the race kit.
My 2001 X1 ran ok with a scorpion can and standard ecu though.

Fair enough. Sooooooooooo! My initial running problems could have been cured by a remapping of the standard ECU rather than the requirement for a replacement race ECU per se?

I guess this means that I and two of my neighbours are currently sitting on what must now be "Unobtainium" ...... 3 essentially brand new standard Buell X1 ECUs?

I believe only the very early ecu's may not be reflashable as such .....later ones as on my 2001 can be reflashed with the racemaps using ecmspy ...........pash or Gunter will possibly be able to tell you if your original ecu is reflashable with later maps ;)

How do you know the voltage is out of norm if you have no log to check with?

Even a brand new O2 sensor's voltage will "vary from the norm", as it simply has not reached it's required operating temperature (left alone the plugs ...), when it comes to plug fouling conditions. Would make much more sense to swap the 10R12(A) with some 10R12X plugs in that case.

Interesting! The 2000 model year X1s came with a number of changes ( lighter flywheels, straight crankpin, new gearcase cover incorporating improved oilways, different gearchange dedent plate, hydraulic lifters and < later 2000 - including "Millennium" - models > a relocated rear cylinder temperature sensor ) over the 1999 models. Maybe this was when they changed the ECU too?

Does this look like the temperature sensor?

And this the TPS (it did change in 2007 though):

As I understood it the temp sensor is the oem part , all other parts are of the shelf parts for cars and trucks....

Pash, thanks for the Motocraft part numbers, the prices on the Li k are a out half what I've seen them elsewhere (91USD, American Sportsbike).http://www.americansportbike.com/shopon ... 17492.html and rays, thanks for the heads up on the differences; the bike's a 2005 but I fitted a 2007 motor a couple of years ago.

Christ knows what's wrong with it, getting a code 11 and it wont start. ECMSpy says my air and engine temps are both >100C when the bike's cold. Will get my meter out tomorrow and see if I can make some sense of it all. Was running fine on Thursday :(
