Thanks Gunter, I'll see if I can source one locally; I'm sure I read in a post from Pash that there were some Vauxhall and Japanese models that were compatible (never has been a Buell dealer in HK, the HD franchise is full of idiots and can't trust a used one from eBay).

The workshop manual troubleshooting flowchart said I should be looking at my fuel pump and injectors.

O2 sensors do not fail often. You can get almost any single wire O2 sensor, in particular for small japanese or korean cars. Maybe you need to replace the plug. As soon the O2 sensor is new, follow the service manual if the problem persists. But a trustworthy reading of the EGO level is essential.

Gunter, Pash, - thank you both for your help, I'll be trawling the car spares shops of Hong Kong tomorrow looking for the Bosch part (according to badweb, I won't even have to change the connector - result!) I could be back on the road in a few days. Read in a related post that changing the sensor wasn't too difficult in-situ; read in the manual that the coolinf fan and shock have to come out. Reckon the truth's somewhere in between. Anyone know any different?

Amazon don't ship to HK and so I've tried to source one locally - what a nightmare that's turned out to be. There's a local Bosch agent and plenty of distributors here but none of them recognise the 10214 part number; they all want the 10 digit Bosch number. Eventually found the part number as 0258002014 in case anyone's interested. Finally found a brand new one on fleaBay for 16 quid

I bought one of ebay of under a tenner.
There's few listed on ebay.com The shipping cost about the same as the part though.

I thought I'd stick a new one in for what they cost, and keep the old one as a spare, as part of the connector had become detached.
Couldn't see what the little plastic bit actually did, but I'm a bit anal/pedantic, and I like things just so

There's also a neat little socket available, so it can be removed with the headers on. Has a split in it for the cable, but they wouldn't send it to spain

As an aside, is there any reason why the boss on the rear header of my X1 can't be moved a little bit, to alow easier access to the bottom exhaust stud nut?

New sensor arrived on Wednesday and it just got fitted; it's back to normal now. It actually works in open loop now, and the log files show sensible voltage figures from the Lambda. I haven't even bothered to clean the plugs yet but I'm guessing they'll look pretty much like the sensor i took out. Thanks to Nick and Gunter for their patience.
