Help, please. My newly acquired Firebolt's engine has destroyed itself. I am in the market for a replacement - can anyone help? I am able to collect and am happy to negotiate to a fair price for a good one. I can't wait to be riding it again......................here's hoping. Graeme |

Hello Gunter, It's not entirely clear, yet. I'll tell you what I have found. The oil pump seized and so it all stopped. On removing the timing cover I found that the exhaust Camshaft, of the rear cyclinder had fused to the in-board bush(in the crankase) and this had been turning in the casing. It looks like this had been spinning for some time - but that can only be speculation. Even in one of these engines cams are spinning at up to 3,500 RPM. I don't think that it can't be machined for a new oversize bush, because I can't centre it, without a factory jig and the strength of the casting will be diminished by the loss of material. Interestingly enough the inlet cam bush of the front cylinderwas also found to be spinning free in the case(but in good condition) and so that one was probably on the way. Because of this I have not stripped it futher. Thanks for your interest and all the best, Graeme |

It will be a 2003 to 2007 XB engine as it is from a Firebolt |

To WillyBuell, Thank you very much indeed. It is an XB engine, which I think may be different to a Thunderstorm engine? My model knowledge is really still a bit thin, as yet. If it were the same I would definately be very interested. I have not yet decided what to do with my own engine - I would like to keep it for now, as I may be able to part-trade it for a working one? I regret that I hesitated a couple of weeks ago and missed out on one from a member(I was on holiday.......) I have yet to seperate the engine from from the fuel tank(the bike) & strip it but it was a sound runner in every other respect with a good gearbox/clutch etc. If I cannot trade it I will just seek to buy another engine outright and then look to strip my own and re-build it at my liesure, replacing the right hand crankcase half and any other parts that are needed(all of those bloody spinning bushes, for starters). If I can't do that, then I will sell the good bits. Thank you for your offer of help. ![]() What a great site this is......... this is a thunderstorm engined XBR ![]() this engine is the earlier type the casing that covers the Crank Position Sensor is different ( old school points cover ) hope this helps ![]() |

As this is a later engine, you will need to swap the cam case breather fitting. Good news is that you now have the later bronze oil pump drive gear which is less susceptible to failure than the steel one on your previous engine. Right on your doorstep too... |
