According to :maz: the 2001 model has all the mods and is the best X1, that’s enough for me to go down that road. Yes I do want the totally black engine model.

Such a shame it needs doing Nick as it really is a lovely bike , you're not the only one not to take the advise not to powder coat the engine though , my next door neighbour bought the ex Hammond and May Honda Goldwing and he's had the engine on that powder coated even after I explained to him all your issues with yours.

I have a 2002 X1 which is in pretty good condition with a :maz: front engine mount on fitted by himself but am really looking for a 2001 model so could do a swap if anybody interested only it’s yellow.

Not sure bad your paint is, but I was recommended and tried Harley engine brightener on an tired XB black engine and the results were fantastic. Saved me painting it.

You powder coated the barrels and heads? I'd assumed it was the crankcases... I'm surprised it hasn't actually burnt off by now.

Damn shame. Your bike was gorgeous.

But yeah, even high temp powder coatings aren't good for over 350F for extended duty even though they can handle 450F spikes if it's short and infrequent. Aside from proper cleaning prep, it also helps to pre-bake the part to drive out any residual contaminants.

Stay away from Cerakote too. I know others have suggested it but the truth is, it's an insulator. The heads and cylinders need to give off heat, not contain it. You won't have to worry about your engine not being pretty after a while, you'll have to worry about it seizing up instead because it can't cool itself.

Sadly, I've seen people anodize their engines as well. It's also an insulator and it cracks from thermal stress because the thermal expansion rate is a lot lower than the base metal, so it ends up causing cracks in the base metal layer which leads to crack propagation over time.

While I have used H-D's rattle can texture black for touch up (it looks darn good too), even it doesn't last more than 2 years. I'm not sure how H-D's process works for engine parts.

I'd suggest just buying new barrels and find yourself some XB heads since it's apart. New is the only way to guarantee this'll never happen again.
