Incase anyone wants to start a new one ?

I have now taken a copy of the database (time stamped as of this post) which can be imported in the future should anyone wish to create, host, administer, patch, maintain and fund a new forum. (I will take another on the 8th if I remember)

Must admit, I cancelled my DD a short while ago, with a heavy heart, but I realised that I wasn't even checking in here once a month. Maybe if the old girl (variously, 'Red Buell'/'Black Bastard'/'Black Beauty', to those that remember it) was currently on the road, it would be different.
But yes, sometimes you have to let things go. If this forum was a dog, there would've been an excruciatingly emotional one-way trip to the vets years ago.
So thanks to everyone for the camaraderie, the technical know-how, the second-hand parts, the banter, the memories; met some lovely people, had some FANTASTIC rides out (Guildford Burger King gang, you know who you are), and I still have the T-shirts, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, the bike to reassemble one day, when I have the time.
See you on the other side ...and I don't mean FB, I'm not that desperate (yet)

I have time (retired), loads of webspace (which will be payed anyway, beacause of the ecmspy.com domain), different options regarding php - please see image - and the hoster offers MyBB V1.8.39 and phpBB V3.3.15 as forum software. This is webspace only, not a host - no root/CLI access.

Tell me, what I have to do, and I will proceed ...

It would need either a new forum creating (this one is many versions out of date) and then update the database and use it (you'll probably need a Plesk licence to run the sql database)

Or lift and shift the lot from the current server, then update/patch it and point the domain name at the new ip address.

Personal I can't see any point. It is a LOT of work for a handful of posts a year, almost zero traffic except for bots and mainly 'funny' jokes etc when there is a post.

Well done all Three of those posting on this thread are responsible for a great deal of the life of this forum but all good things come to an end. It does seem that forums have had their day. I have also been frequenting the Harley-Davidson Riders Club of Great Britain forum over the past few years. Traffic has been declining and the club committee became terrified of the implications of the Online Safety Act so have now made it read only.

Most of those who have been contributing to this site over the past few years seem to have a deep distaste for Facebook. I can understand where some of this comes from but it is a great way to keep in touch and communicate with those you don't see as often as you would like to. Why not give it a go? There is a whole community on there comprised of many of your favourite old screen names plus a load of new folk who are barely aware that this place ever existed. There is also CJ's website http://www.ukbuellgroup.co.uk. It's not a forum but you will find details of meets on there where you can go really old school and turn up some place on your motorbike (doesn't have to be a Buell) and talk to your mates face to face.

It most definitely has been a blast and I hope to see all of you around at some time.

You are right for sure. Current traffic will not justify any effort. But, on the other hand, wouldn't it be a pity, to lose all the knowledge buried and hidden in here?

My suggestion would be, to move the forum to an archived/read-only state, just for looking things up - probably anonymously. When this could be done from the database alone, without the forum software on top, I am fine with that too. Databases earned my living for thirtysomething years, so I'm speaking SQL in various flavours quite fluently, also SSIS for ETL purposes and Mongo a bit .

How does a forum backup look like? Could it be limited to a single (technical) board? How large is it?
In the meantime I am going to install phpBB and try to get a little bit familiar with it's admin UI.

Sure, when I download the last back up I will get it to you. Keeping the tables containing the technical aspects of the forum is a good shout.
