Given the overall decline in car driving standards generally, I'd fear for them either way, if bikes are still allowed in the self-driving brave new world.
Reflecting on becoming old, I think a major problem is that when-i-were-lad, if you crashed a car you knew it would hurt. Nowadays cars are far far safer, which has to be a good thing, but knowing this and no longer having witnessed as many horrific injuries, people really don't think they have to pay attention anymore.
A mix of self driving cars and modern safer cars will only exacerbate that trend. Whilst bikes/bikers are little less vulnerable, or safer, the they were 30 years ago. Which has got to become a problem for ban-everything legislators at some point, or at least until the full automation of all other vehicles stops people pulling out on bikes, etc. Which seems too far off to ever happen.
Depressing, but I think the time when either riding or driving was a true pleasure is soon to be a thing of the past. Which I think is a shame for any kids or grandkids, who's ever they are.
