Post subject:  Crankcase breather blowing oil

Hi looking for advice,
Just finishing a hardtail chop using a 200 buell 1200 lightning engine. Its pumping quit a bit of oil from what I think is the crankcase breather nipple (see pic). Not overfilled oil nor are head breathers blocked. Reading various blogs on this things are pointing to the crankcase seal failure. Anyone else had this and did the new seal solve it?...thanks

Are you talking about the elbow on the back of the camcase with clear hose on it ?......if so, that is the oil tank breather hose ie. it should be routed to the oil tank :)

Yes, the nipple with the clear pipe on it. I have a breather pipe comming from my oil tank that I can put on it but I won't have any tank breather then as not sure if they are seal units? If so I would expect that the cylinder head breathers to come into play....just not sure ... dont want to preasurise the tank!

Exactly, that's what it's for ie. the oil tank volume changes are connected to the engine via that hose and the cylinder head breathers take care of it.....if you have that clear hose going to atmosphere, then you're gonna run out of oil PDQ lOl

Others have said that their should be a mist comming out of that nipple/hose and some have routed it to a can or through the exhaust system? Do I take it then it's a sealed oil system on the buell lighting and it breaths through the head only? Be great if i could could put the tank breather on it...will solve my problem in an instant ...Thanks

It IS a sealed system, go ahead and connect that breather to your oil tank = job done :yup:

Sorry, was just thinking out loud ......unless you have a cush drive in the rear wheel, that chain is gonna trash the tranny big time.....although I'm guessing in that chassis the Buell engine will never see its true potential......just wish you builders of 'fashion' bikes would stick to using ordinary H-D motors instead of wasting an engine developed for a performance sports bike :)

I'm sure the choice of chain drive was a function of not being able to find a belt of the proper length for his design. But then again, with the various pulley and sprocket sizes out there, perhaps a combo could have been achieved that would fit properly, although perhaps at the expense of a crap final drive ratio.

That said, when I club raced an X1 for 2 seasons in heavyweight sportsman, I had a chain conversion (with the crappy tubular swingarm) but never had a tranny issue as hard as I beat on that bike. He might be ok long-term for putzing around at a leisurely pace.
