If you'd come on the bike and weren't in such a rush to get away, I'd have fitted it for you FOC.........would also have checked the bike over for you
Just hoping you haven't damaged the outer race by drifting the plug against it

Re: Fitment of the XB gearbox output grease/oil nipple conve
I'd like to know which brand of grease gun people use with this mod as I've seen grease guns get stuck on same sized nipples. This even happened at the reputable tool traders I visited to obtain a suitable device.
Is the syringe and tube method softley uses as effective at pushing oil past the ball valve.? If not I'm tempted to keep to funnelling oil into the existing seal.

Re: Fitment of the XB gearbox output grease/oil nipple conve
I couldn't get a syringe to create enough pressure to get the oil in. So just unscrewed the nipple and squirted the oil in that way and then put the nipple back in.

Not sure as I only ever used my fathers Swiss made WANNER and that pushed on and off without hassle, so maybe they didn't know how to use it.

A grease gun will lock onto the nipple if it pressurises inside the gun (ie blockage or too much grease used)....if you allow the pressure to seep out then the greasegun will detach as normal.

Ah so! Is this why Wanner has bleed valve next to trigger. Also lock nut below nozzle, for adjustment?

Got mine today & fitted it, Thanks Maz.
Must say I was a little surprised to find grease behind the rubber seal
didn't look to be that old either, so maybe whoever serviced it last (which wasn't that long ago) just did it the long winded way.

Re: Fitment of the XB gearbox output grease/oil nipple conve
Hey guys, I have an XL1250N that I trashed my maingear on by primering and painting an old drive pulley and not cleaning up the mating surfaces. This must have allowed enough space for it to develop enough slop over 800 mi. that I was about to throw the belt. The splines hammered out the pulley and the face of the splines was rounded and the face of the race was badly scored. Expensive lesson learned.
I am in the process of rebuilding it now, but I also have an XL1250R that I recently went to replace this seal on and found the grease from the end needle bearing had flung out. A forum member on XLF, steelworker, told me about your grease zerk fitting and was kind enough to look into getting me a few. Awesome idea Maz...can't believe this isn't a factory part by now.
I did have a few questions about it if I may. Can you "feel" when you have filled the void with grease and have pushed a pump or two worth into the bearing like you can with most things with grease fittings or is it all a guestimate? Any concerns pumping grease back into the bottom end? DO you only want to grease the outboard bearing, or are we trying to also hit the inner bearing?
It appears as though the factory used a simple tan colored high-temp bearing grease here...would the red Mobil-1 synthetic work instead or should I consider a whole new grease gun and lube? I had to go that route unless I have to because I will only use quality Lincoln brand guns after having so many cheapos leak out on me. I would think grease would be preferable to 20w50 wouldn't it? I'm not sure how well I could get 20w50 to pump in through a zerk fitting, but I've never tried either...I'd think it'd be more difficult to keep it in the gun.
"There is a “cheep skate” alternative for those who should know better but don’t but I will not cover that here." I would actually like the details on this if someone would care to PM me. I just don't see how you could do it unless you rigged up a rubber plug of some sort to force grease in, then replace the seal with a new one. Thanks guys!!!+

Re: Fitment of the XB gearbox output grease/oil nipple conve
Any input on a grease that would be "compatible" with Mobil-1 20w50 V-Twin and a Kevlar EnergyOne clutch? Is it basically just molybdenum that causes problems with friction material?
I see Mobil-1 synthetic universal red grease is also a lithium complex type so I'm hoping it is acceptable as "LM" seems to be.
