I'm no good at searches, I get distracted and follow irrelevant threads so, please can someone tell me how to check the oil level on my bike. Is it bike on stand, or bike held upright? Is it filler plug pushed in or resting on top? Is it hot engine or cold? Finally as everyone seems to say these are fragile engines what do you out there suggest is the most suitable oil? Thanks.

And, in your experience Maz, for how long after switching off will you still get an accurate reading?

Not long at all......should be checked as soon as the motor is switched off.

Do you get the most accurate reading on an XB as soon as you stop it ?

Just out of interest; what kind of reading would you get on an XB with a warm engine ticking over? I've noticed that you have to be VERY quick to get much of a reading at all on some XBs.

I check my XB (2010 Model) when the engine is idling. It does not correspond to the manual, but it gives the most accurate readings.

Anyway, no added doubt if there might be a damage. All Porsche engines (aircooled with dry sump) have to be checked on idle.
