But then again does it look sh.. if you put driving lights on?

But be aware that HID's on any vehicle are illegal unless you fit an auto-levelling device. Unlike some things that you can get pulled for (darkies in daylight, loud pipes etc) this is a significant safety issue, IMO.

I wouldn't want to be the one who had to explain to a widow that a car rammed her husband after the driver was blinded by a set of illegal lights fitted to the bike.

hi Norm,

i hear what you are saying...
i think as long as the HID are adjusted correctly they dont blind anyone...the light pattern is still the same and its just a bit brighter...also i think it helps us on 2 wheels to be more easily seen in the daylight by cars!

i also think a single HID low beam light will be less offensive than adding 2 or more additional lights and look like a X-mas tree...

i have them in my R1100S too and so far not one car or other oncoming vehicle has flashed me ....for them being to high or offensive

to go back to the original questions: if you dont want to go down the HID route - just get some philips nightvision bulbs etc...i havent tried them myself, but they claim to give you more light...
just my opinion...
thx Lars

This is an interesting point and more of a problem on a bike.

I use a Philips MotoVision lamp in the dip, about £15 each, and is much better/ whiter than the OEM one. I have also fitted E4 H3 spot lamps. I have a set of PIAA H3 and H7 lamps but not fitted them yet. They are VERY good but £40 each (£160 for both sets).

I have to say that in all my years on the road, even in the sticks, I do not use high beam much. A good dip should be enough but the design of the XB lights is the main problem. The two headlamp mod helps as well. Also you do not want to be switching a HID lamp in and out all the time as it will feck it up.

IMO I think you are right, Norm. I just do not think HID is worth all the messing about with but if they want it then that is down to them.

just to be clear..there is no real messing about...the HID ballast fits onto the original loom and you can mount the ballast on the bracket where the horn is mounted too...just take the front cover off (6 screws) and lower the lights out (3 screws) the rest is plug and play...

This is always told in Germany also, even by those who should know better, but a close look to the law shows that this constraint applies to multitrack ("mehrspurige") vehicles only. I don't know how this is handled in the UK, but perhaps there's a small loophole too.
