so why would the afv be so high ..........is it because of the fault last time it was running .....will it correct itself on a run?

Because shorted IAT = low resitance = very high temperatures (pretended) = less fuel injected = high ego corr = high AFV - although the one shown seems too high for just a IAT failure. Minimum fuel from air temp. correction is 86 % @ 125 degC. Reset AFV, go for a ride and watch how it will change.

Thanks Gunter .........been thinking that the TPS fault was probably due to the fact that they share a common earth .....so if it shorted the IAT 5v to that earth the ecu probably picked up an incorrect signal from TPS as well because of that 5v being applied wrong side of it .........put it back together tonight and now have a flickering oil light  ..........suspect the switch and not wiring though as it stays off if the wire is disconnected from switch so is not earthing somewhere else.

I don't think the IAT short had any impact on the TPS, if it had just been grounded. More ground than ground isn't possible (ask your pilot ...) and if the ground wire has a good connectivity, it would not shift the TPS signal. This also would not explain the stalling engine.

Does the X1 have a sub-harness for TPS, CPS and IAT the could be replaced easily?

Not had a chance to look any more at it ..........the more i think about it the more it makes me think the new crank sensor could possibly be faulty.................was chatting to Jon at BB on Saturday and he says symtoms are typical of a CPS failure.
My initial feeling when it stopped on the way to Belgium was CPS as if you tried to restart straight away all it did was backfire and fire totally at random and HAD to be left for 10 to 15 mins before you could restart..............after fitting the new sensor the cutting out was just the same but now it restarts imediately but runs rough ...may try and borrow a known good sensor and see what happens from there.

whats causing the high AFV, possible intermitant sticking injector when hot ?, the lambda sees the lean condition and adjusts to compensate, maybe the injector kicks back in then it has a massive over rich condition which floods the plugs(black smoke popping etc) and kills the engine ?
Have you tried it with the lambda disconnected just in case thats faulty ?
oh yeh, check your fuel as Maz will confirm :yup:

Keep it coming.

Well i've fitted my spare fueltank tonight and filled with fresh fuel.......something that did seem strange though is that i fitted a new genuine fuel filter tonight as well to replace the generic one i fitted the other week.......and the same as when i removed the original all the fuel ran out of the system ok but when i tried blowing through the filter it was just like the original in that i couldn't :? fuel looked clean and normal (been through about 5 tank fulls since problem started ) and totally evaporated within minutes. Tried blowing through filter 20 minutes later and filter appears clear again :? ....................So before i do anything else i'll road test with new tank on as i know fuel is fresh ......hoping fuel pump is ok as been stood empty for about 5 years but appears to run and pressurise ok.
Will hopefully get to try it in the next couple of days and let you all know how it runs....................or more to the point how long it runs.

Not been out on it anymore so not pulled plugs apart from the time i kept restarting without allowing it to cool which ended with it black smoking and very sooty plugs.

That wont tell you much, you want to know what happens at the point of failure.

I personally think you need to be able to understand what happens rather than just swapping everything over and not knowing where you are, then again it's your bike...

I'm not a gambling man but I still 'lean' towards fuel starvation...... it's showing all the right symptoms.
