Sorted ..... Hard luggage. More comfort for the missus that'll make the trip much more fun.
Again just chill and enjoy.

250 miles each way on a uly, that's just a short hop ;) lOl

When were your wheel bearings last changed? Take a spare belt if you can. As Kevmean often says you can usually borrow the tools it's the spare parts that are unobtainium.

Hi guys,

I will be taking my Uly and my girlfriend on holiday in Brittany, France, in a couple of weeks.

Given that this will be my longest ever trip to date (400km each way) + I have no big experience with moto-touring (and most importantly my gf does not appreciate it as much as I do) + I have been a Uly owner for just 6 months... I want to prepare to ensure that this will be as smooth as possible.

Hence, I have a few Q I'd like to ask:

- Besides the usual oil level, brake-pads, brake-fluid, tyre checks, what else would you suggest I check and replace over the next fortnight?

- I was thinking of buying a belt and taking it with me, just in case.
In your experience, what are the typical signs of a belt about to pass away?

- I have 2 soft panniers (Oxford first-time, 48L) and a large backpack that I'll bungee to the tail-piece.
We are off for a week and I'd like to maximise luggage capacity, suggestions?

I even thought of buying a metal rack to provide additional support as opposed to the existing one.
Found this http://www.ventura-bike.co.uk/images/models/128.jpg , any other you'd recommend?

Thanks once again
: )

Ventura is top kit. Its what I use on the 1125R.

Thanks again Pash, we'll be leaving on the 12th (for 8 days) so this weekend is the only chance I might be able to ride over.
If you don't hear from me you can assume that I cannot come (lots on my plate this w.end) but nonetheless I am immensely grateful for your offer

Back to the belt topic, are there any typical signs that can give an indication of a belt needing replacing?
I looked carefully at it this morning and I can't sign any sign of tearing/fragility, I will post a pic soon.

to check your belt - look for signs of cracking or fluffing - if you get a manual it will tell you in there.

Also - bearings / bearings / bearings

Put the bike on a paddock stand and rotate the back wheel, look for buldges (stones trapped), tears (stone damage) or fraying at the edge...

Always change the belt 1/2 mile before it snaps

European breakdown cover comes automatically with Carole Nash Insurance.

Pack your panniers, then throw at least 50% of it back in the garage/ kitchen/ pantie drawer. You won't need it.

Cable ties and Duck tape.

Don't worry, have fun.

Ride on the Right. ;)

Your Ully could eat that trip both ways in one day ....seriously ....tis a good idea to carry a spare belt though as they can fail without warning. some of us did approx 660 miles the other weekend just for a BBQ ...so just do a general check over oils....wheel bearings .....tyres etc and just get on and ride ;)
My Cr did over 3000miles in two weeks last year to the Czech republic and back
The X1 did john o'groats to lands end in less than two days .
Ordinary Buells will tour ............Ullys are actually made to do that ;)

Uh... bearings, absolutely no idea as I bought it 2nd hand and service history was incomplete.

Oil, oil filter, oil sensor, plugs and brake pads were replaced in March as part of the huge  failure I had back then (injectors still pumping when bike was off, apparently due to powerizer+faulty relay )
I then did the breather re-route and trashed the powerizer. Since then, besides from a faulty ground the bike has been running absolutely perfectly
I'll just fork out £40 for EuropAssistance or Rac, load the bike, DUCK tape my gf to the back and enjoy the trip...

I will post pictures from Mont Saint Michel and Belle Ile en Mer when I return

Just a word about Carole Nash: they quoted me £1300 for 3rd party only.
I then got comprehensive through MCE for £370 8-)
