This torque setting is wrong

72-108 in/lbs. (97.6 – 146.4 Nm).

Should be ft/lbs.

Eric.

I have just done this but did not torque the screw up to the torque setting adviced as I thought that (97.6 – 146.4 Nm). a little excessive for the size of the screw.

is that the correct torque or is it wrong. I have just done mine up tight as i didnt want to strip the thread or the head of the screw.

regards
:yc:

Done know what the screw or bolt is like but that setting is bloody tight....its like what you'd expect on a 17 or 19mm bolt or bigger.

Came across one like that recently, a lock nut on a swing arm pivot on an old BMW and it was a 27mm nut !!!

Eric.

Sorry, guys, tested it and it seemed to work for that document only. I'm not that silly, Maz lOl I did test that it didn't open up the whole of H-Dnet ;)

Here's some of the text

Quote:
2006 – 2009 Buell Ulysses Ground Repair
Poor ground connections have been found at the tail section ground locations.
Below are some of the symptoms that you might see, and a procedure to repair
this condition. While the specifically affected models are 2006 to 2009 XB12X,
this Tech Tip could serve as a reference for improving ground circuits on any
model.
In the figure below, you can see where the negative battery cable is attached to
the tail section of the vehicle. This ground location is essential to virtually all of
the motorcycle’s electrical systems. A poor contact here can cause poor running
issue and no crank conditions. The instrument cluster may even stay on after the
key is turned to the OFF position. These issues can also be intermittent.

To clean the ground area, you must remove the fastener that secures the ground
terminals to the tail section and clean all surfaces. This includes the fastener, tail
section boss, ring terminals, and battery tray. (See images below)

Once the faster is removed, lightly sand both the threads and the face of the
screw. (See image below)

Lightly sand both sides of the ring terminals to clean any impurities from the
surfaces. (See images below)

Lastly, clean the ground boss and the battery tray surfaces by sanding to remove
any paint or other impurities.

After all of these surfaces have been cleaned, apply dielectric grease to the
fastener and reinstall to 72-108 in/lbs. (97.6 – 146.4 Nm).

I know this thread is useless without pictures but it's a step in the right direction :D

Steve

PS Hope you're not being offensive, TFD lOl

Um I hope not Steve :run:.

Anyway the procedure that Steve has quoted from HD is exactly the way it should be done. Dont worry about the troque setting just nip the bolt up. It sorts a mulitude of faults and, given that it only takes 20 min to do, is the best mod you could do to a Uly. It is free as well. If you have an X or XT bike do it now.

It makes me wonder sometimes, or maybe not, why some HD dealers have not picked up on this problem given that HD have listed it as one. Mind you I have always found that I have to "do-for-myself" in the world today. Its hard to find anyone who knows about anything anymore.

Many thanks to all here for all your help.

You're quite right about nipping up the fastener. I hope no one attempts to use the NM values given in the OFFICIAL HD document  lOl lOl

Dont think there wrong just my wrench only goes to 50 lbs/in so wont be able to use my 1/4 drive tourqe wrench any way.

The Nm values are a staggering 860-1300 in/lbs approx

I can hear threads stripping from here lOl

Someone here once asked the difference between and engineer and a fitter. Well this, but not all of course, is a prime example. An engineer knows if something looks wrong, like these numbers, and a fitter just fits an item. This can be how problems start. Like changing out parts to solve a fault, it does not fix it and they expect you to pay the huge bill.

This sort of thing is "not on" IMO but is very common with, to some extent, all of the car/bike dealers today. It is one of the reasons I have always thought a dealer service history is not worth, mostly, the paper its written on.
