well i bought it with 13,500 miles on, it and a full 10,000 mile service history, ive only done around 200 on it,as the oil looked clean and the right level i sorted other bits first, and was about to change the oil, so i dont know what was in it,i was going to put 20/50 hd oil in.

Got to be worth a try. Mine came from a dealer that I know would of just put a 10-40 semi in and mine made a noise as you describe but went once I got a good 20-50 in it.

I know this post was a while ago but i can now update on the problem, the bike was fine for a few hundred miles. And over the winter i did some work on it replced the rocker cover gaskets, pushrod seal, and cut down the timming cover, got it all back together, and after about 200 miles i got the noise back,i knew the pump and everything was good due to the work i had done ,so thought id drain the oil tank and have a look in there, this is what i found.

its the foil from an oil bottle,i am always very carefull so i know i did not drop it in there,so i have no idea how long its been floting around, the noise always started after it had been thrashed,so i think that the foil would circulate with the oil then sink to the bottom of the tank when i stopped,it would then partially block the oil line, bike now sounds good and goes well,so a very lucky escape.

It won't have gone through the engine cos even if it got through the pump, which I very much doubt, the filter would have stopped it. I can't see that being the tickety tick. More likely to be too thin oil or worn tappet.

I looked at that bike when it was for sale the time before you bought it and it really was mechanically unloved, I am pleased you are giving it the love it needs...

But if the oil flow was compromised then could this have not lowered the oil pressure and hence the tappety tap noise? However if there was not enough oil pressure to keep the tappets happy then surely there would be other issues for bearings etc?

The foil was in the oil tank and i think blocking the oil line, therefore restricting the oil flow, yes the oil light did come on,but i shut the engine off as soon as i i saw the light come on,and yes i am keeping a close eye in case of other damage, although when i cleaned out the oil tank the oil looked clean, all does seem to be good so far, ive done 260 miles since finding this problem and finally cured all oil leaks,im also going to be riding it up to wales in three weeks for a couple of days,

They're never finally cured, just temporarily halted. ;)
