Ash, give it more time to warm up before you head out. Count your warm-up in minutes (get gear that takes longer to put on, check your belt and tyre pressures, finish your toast and tea, go back in and kiss the family again, etc... :run: ). You will still need to feather the clutch before the bike is really good to go, though. Local roads with low speeds and low rev's, ready on the clutch, until she is fully smoothed out - giving the engine time to warm fully through and expand evenly with the heat. Take care of the foreplay, the better to enjoy the full ride.

Mine doesn't get the luxury of five minutes warming up, that's five minutes less in bed. I start mine while freewheeling down the drive on full choke, check traffic and pull away. The choke comes off once I've hooked up third gear, then I pootle for a mile or so, then give it the beans. ;)
Stock carb with Dynojet Thunderslide kit, race filter.
I use the winter fuel additive at this time of year.

Happened again today, finished work about 4 and started it up in the usual fashion and a HUGE crack from the pipe, the biggest I have ever heard and this time a scorch mark on the ground ... that cant be right can it ... ? :?

I cant understand why it does this when starting from cold. When its warmed up and I start it it never does it, only when stone cold, there cant be that much unburnt fuel in the pipe to ignite and besides the pipe is cold.

Pull the choke out
Twist the throttle open and close it
Push the starter with a whiff of throttle
Couple of seconds at idle then pull away
Give it a couple of minutes of gentle riding, then choke off

If the engine is very unresponsive or cuts out, it is telling you it wants the choke on for longer...

:D

So, it explodes from the pipe when I start it and you want me to give it a handful before I start it lOl I shall invest in a fire extinguisher first!

Leave it to warm up a little longer Ash, then get the choke in when you ride off and keep the revs up a little higher than normal, slip the clutch a little more than normal on your tight corners ;)

Definately turn it off-the last thing you want is the engine filling with petrol like it did on FUBAR not long after I bought it
