gives info on removing shock to get at S1 sump plug.

In my manual, and on the bike I can't find a sump plug? Any pics to show me where I'm not looking? It seems so obvious I don't like to ask, but where would the fill plug be too

If yer just changing engine oil, then all you need to do is pull the plug on the oil tank.

Strictly speaking, there is no sump plug on an S1.......the plug you'd be removing to completely drain the sump is actually the scavenge drilling blanking plug.
Depending on the year of S1 there could be 2 of these.....96/97 had 2 drillings from the gearcase/camcase, whereas 98 onwards only had the one.
With the shock removed, you need to look at the base of the sump by the oil pump, 98 onwards will have a single 3/16'' allen headed blanking plug to the rear of the sump, earlier models have flat screwdriver slotted plugs front and rear of the sump.

And the filler is the oil tank cap/dipstick thing under your seat!

... suggest that some word of warning about the meaning of the phrase "dry sump" or even "step away from the spanners" be appropriate?

Sorry, but the question above makes me think either you are doing something very clever, Griff, or something not very clever at all. There is little oil in the sump of an S1. The oil tank is under the seat. Drain it from the tube which sticks out the bottom of the tank and fill it through the cap on the top of that tank.

Or am I missing something huge and about to be banned from this forum yet again?

The only reason Mick removed the plug in the original post you quoted was because he had got petrol in his oil from leaving the fuel tap on, he removed the plug to ensure all the fuel was drained out of the sump.

Well thats a relief cos I've already changed the oil but thought I'd better check I hadn't missed something after reading about a sump plug. I am probably getting mixed up as Ducati and Beemer must be both wet sumps, but Triumph twin I had before that had an oil tank but you still had to take out the sump plug and clean and put the oil back through the top of crankcase.

I only removed the plug, as I had no idea how much fuel/ oil mix was left in the sump, it is not part of a standard oil change procedure.
