Going on a bit of a trip on the Uly and luggage space is going to be tight, so I was thinking of taking spare oil under the seat. The bottle fits perfectly, so I'm just wondering if the heat under there, and/or proximity to electrics might make this a bad move.

Find another place for the oil or get a life? :)

If your "bit of a trip" is of the Anchorage to Tierra del Fuego variety, then I'd add a bit of luggage and pop the oil in there.... if not, just chill & accept they don't tend to use a significant amount between oil changes.

:yup: to what Digger says. I can think of plenty of things I'd take before oil, unless yours has a history of burning the stuff or you are going a long way off the radar. Even if you are far from a Harley dealer, a good diesel oil is available most places.

...which reminds me, have I ever told you guys about...sorry, I'll shut up...

I'd take some spare oil, to be honest. Sods law says if you don't you'll only start to run low. I find oil consumption seems to increase dramatically the further I am from a Harley dealer.

Strange that.

Where are you going?

If the bottle fits perfectly, then it's the perfect place to carry the bottle!

My longest trip on my Cyclone was over 2.5k to Italy and didn't really need a top-up despite warm weather and mountain passes. And if you do, like Norm said, get yourself some diesel car-oil on the way. Carrying oil isn't really needed, and can get terribly messy if anything goes wrong with the packaging. Which is not at all impossible on a (intermittently) vibrating bike like a Buell :D

If you go away service the bike and take a sealed 1L bottle of oil. If you use any wrap it in a bag, tape the top and try to keep it upright. It should not be a problem.

That said, I remember following a Uly which was carrying some spare oil through southern France. The bottle pinged out of the bungee and headed off up the road through the middle of a town like we were overflying the Möhne reservoir.

Not sure if this will help but I bolted a couple of plastic drink-bottle holders to my rear box - 1 for oil, the other for a drink!

You just need to make sure you grab the right one when you reach round for a drink...
