Although these ignition modules look like an ECM they do not have data link pins (I have tried). And even if it did have data link pins, you are relying on ECMSpy to recognise it. Happy to be proved wrong though.

My preferred solution, if no 24 pin Race ignition unit is available, would be to create a slave harness to connect to an older 8 pin ignition unit, of which there are much better choice of unit; Buell Race / Screaming Eagle / Dyna 2000 / Crane etc.

For the harness you would need:
1 x Deutsch DT04-12PA (DT 12 way receptacle. Black. Including wedgelock.)
1 x Deutsch DT04-12P (DT 12 way receptacle. Grey. Including wedgelock.)
7 x Deutsch 3-1672 (Size 16 Turned Sockets. 16, 18 & 20 AWG. (0.5 - 1.0mm CSA))
1 x Deutsch DT06-8SA (DT 8 way plug. Black. Including wedgelock.)
7 x Deutsch 3-1670 (Size 16 Turned Pins. 16, 18 & 20 AWG. (0.5 - 1.0mm CSA))
18 x Deutsch 3-1699 (DT Range Cavity Seals)

You would miss out on rear cylinder temperature monitoring, but this should not be a problem, it was introduced at the same time as the plugs were swapped to 10R12s as some braces to go with the belt.

If I was to use one of the mentioned kits, dyna 2000 for example, where does the map come from? dyno runs :?

Thank fook for that, I thought I had killed this thread...

Curves for the Dyna 2000 are here...

Interesting article with all other timing maps here...

Do you need a dyno run? Only as much as you would to choose between a Race or Std ignition system...

Where do you find all this stuff Pash?
I liked the look of the dyna one anyway but still can't see how you'd know if the map is correct for my bike. :?

Good question... How do you know the Race ignition unit is correct for your setup?

How do you think the M2 01 Race ignition unit maps differ from the 00 Race ignition maps? Nothing else has changed on the inlet, heads, pistons, exhaust...

I lent my 97/98/99/00 Race ignition unit to a forum member who put it on his M2, the only difference he noticed was that it revved higher and he doesn't need to rev his bike that high so he passed it back to me...

I don't know Pash, in all honesty I have never thought about it before, its difficult to imagine anyone with less knowledge about this subject than me.

basically then are you suggesting that the race kit modules only difference may be the higher rpm limiter? there must be some differences as most of the modules on the information are switchable between 4 maps :? .

That sounds like too many choices to me and at this point I normally just stick my head in the sand, or machine a new yoke as I can do that :hehe:

I played around with the 4 curves on my Dyna 2000 and chose the least aggressive one, curve 4, but my engine is not the same as yours.

I think you should keep your eye open for the 01 Race unit, they do come up from time to time on eBay, and you wont be needing one until spring (although the coming 5 days has nice weather programmed in). If you don't get one, you will always wonder what it would have done for you. Besides, I don't suppose you are the kind of guy that wants to faf around with special connectors...

The Race unit, I would think, has a more aggressive advance curve as well as the rev limiter, but the question is, does the more advanced curve give you more power?

Interesting article here for whether it is a better unit - http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/m ... 1009646764

I plotted the data out from the Battle2Win article but I am not sure I believe it, the curves are all over the place.

I took a load of ignition units to the lab at work to test on simulated inputs, but the results were really hard to decipher. I am not content with just a square wave of fixed frequency, I would be happier modelling the timing rotor properly with a programmable signal generator.

Oh yeah, don't buy that unit of Dinuns1, I bet you 50p it is an 8 pin connector rather than 2 x 12s...
