 Post subject: Winter - tyre warmers ?

Had a couple of slippery moments on the way to work this morning (ice on a road that is technically closed for repair), hadn't travelled far and the tyres were cold, and I was wondering if it may be worthwhile fitting tyre warmers on a timer to help put some heat in the tyres before I set off in the morning.

Would it be worthwhile ?

Maybe for the first mile till they cooled down again? Your not going to be going fast enough to keep heat in the tyres if there is ice on the road? What do the Scandinavians and Canadians do as they obviously face these conditions more than we do. Oh other than fit studded tyres.

I wouldn't have thought a sticky tyre would have any hold on ice...

I have to agree with all of the above-
You wouldn't be able to keep the heat in the tyres, and even a warm sticky tyre wouldn't be any help on ice.
What do Canadians do? They don't ride bikes this time of year thats for sure :!:

Isn't it illegal for canadians to ride a bike in winter? Something to do with all vehicles are supposed to have winter tyres fitted for winter.

slippy roads = much lighter less powerful bike.

There was mud all over the roads on the way to work this morning, but the C90 didn't need tyre warmers.

I'd say at this time of year a more road based tyre rather than hypersports type will give you more grip..........road tyres are designed for road conditions rather than the racetrack type riding that the over sporty tyres are.

:yt: Lighter, lower bike with less torque is the way to go, no problems with the Enfield this morning on ungritted roads :yup:

I've got some snow tyres for the 2cv though...... so 'm ready 8-)

Is a warm tyre going to be in contact long enough to melt ice? :hehe:

I have tried tyre-warmers in the winter but couldn't find extension leads long enough to get me all the way to work lOl .

I guess fitting 170 bhp-capable super-sport track-tyres on a mere 70 bhp-at-the-wheel of an HD-engined Buell as some seem to favour won't work terribly well either when it's cold. My Avon ST do remarkably well in the cold after only a short warming-up.

Why not fill them with boiling oil. :coat:

Somewhere I have seen WINTER tyres - with stud provision - Mainly for BMW GS types.
