Post subject:  Looking for a 1125R - 08/09 models - help please

Hi,
Newbie looking for a 1125R. There seem to be about 12 up for sale just now.
How many are there in the UK in total I wonder?
I understand that there were beneficial mods on 09 models. Is there a starting chassis/VIN number/range for 09 models, or is the year of manufacture on the VIN plate? (I note that some of the new/old stock anniv models are registered on 10 plates) Please do not divulge actual numbers, and no more nurdy questions from me, honest!
Thanks J2T 8-)

If it's a 2008 model it will have a blue frame ;)

VIN number - 10th digit is model year.

To be quite honest I would go for an 08 model - the 25th anniversary model with the blue frame. Although there were some teething problems the bike should have been sorted.

Main problems are -

clutch leak - doesn't matter which year/model, they all do it, but help is on hand - Oberon performance will soon be releasing a replacement clutch cylinder that will sort the problem. Erik Buell racing (EBR) also market their own solution to the problem.

early 08 rear LED indicators have a tendency to burn out - later ones are better but can still fail. Easy solution is to fit after market bulb ones or order the ones fitted to 10 models - these have bulbs.

08 models were subject to a recall about a possible 5th gear oil starvation - this should have been rectified but any dealer should be able to check the VIN to see if the work has been done.

08s and some 09s also had a recall to re-route the front brake hose - check to make sure that the hose goes down the outside of the fork and not between the fork/fender/wheel where it can rub.

Some 08s also had a problem with battery drain when not used for a few days - IIRC it was attributed to a parasitic draw from the instrument cluster (IC) - the solution is to always use the engine kill switch when not using the bike.

This also had a knock on effect - 09/10 models have a different stator with a higher output - these are known to fail - there was a recall to fit an extra wiring harness to restrict output - but this hasn't solved the problem. This is main reason why I suggest getting an 08 model as a new stator will be expensive - or you can get the existing one rewound - but it could fail again. EBR also sell a kit that basically consists of a modified 08 lower output stator/rotor.

If you have any questions/concerns, please ask !

Not an authority, but I am a glutton for punishment - I own an 08 1125R and a 10 1125CR ...

... and search the archives as this question has been asked before, so there will be more info already posted in previous threads.

Oh, and early 09 models also had a recall for the cam chain tensioner.

There is more - not really problems, but more recommendations/modifications that can make ownership easier.

I have an 09 model, and after all the factory recalls done by black bear the bike is fantastic,i have always been a huge fan of buells and have owned them now for some years,my 1125r however is the best by far,08 or 09 i dont think you will have any regrets as long as the work has been done.

:D

Thanks for all the tips guys. I guess the stator issue seems to be the most serious issue from my prospective. Advice therefore points me in the direction of a 08 model.
Am about a third of the way through the excellent archive! I will be studying the ads and hoping some more 1125s come on the market. Maybe the prospect of a first MOT or a potential warrenty expiry may trigger thoughts of selling? I do seem to remember the new/old stock pre reg (by HD) Anniversary models being advertised at £4995 in early 2010.
