Hi Guys, Apologies in advance if this sounds nuts, useless or naive... but I have a keen interest in electronics etc and I've been toying with the idea of a "digital" dashboard for a while So anyway, it all started when I came across this Scooterputer . Which is a really cool DIY interface, based on the popular Arduino, able to provide a digital speedo, voltage reading, sms-triggered GPS tracking system... total overkill, expensive, but cool as More researching and I landed on the Portable Dashboard. Simpler, originally made for HD's, but still too expensive at ±$320 Nonetheless, while reading about it I noticed that the component used for passing the data from the ECM to an Android handset is nothing more than a Bluetooth OBD-II Scan Tool. More research + the fact that the "Portable dashboard" above works with what seems to be a regular OBD-II scan tool for cars, leads me to believe that any scan tool could work (connector hacking aside) with the Buell's ECM. http://pinoutsguide.com/pin_CarElectronics.shtml http://pinoutsguide.com/CarElectronics/ ... nout.shtml http://pinoutsguide.com/CarElectronics/ ... nout.shtml If that is the case, given that a crappy bluetooth Scan tool is £15 on ebay, one could theoretically use the existing Android apps (i.e. http://www.plxkiwi.com/kiwibluetooth/software3.html ) to: - Read/reset error codes - monitor speed, RPMs, engine temp etc. Does anyone know if I'm talking s**t? What protocol does the Buell's ECM use? |

To summarize... I just want to understand what OBDII/CAN protocol the Buell uses. ISO-9141 ? VPW ? PWM ? KWP 2000 ? Based on other stuff I've read, I'd assume it's VPW |

www.ecmspy.com contains the protocol. You would just need to pick the live data up. There was a post on here by someone who did something similar, can't rennet fully but he was overseas... |

This maybe a naive quessie - is the Buell ODB-II? Harley has their own CANBUS iirc. But I don't know if Buell used it. This just an "in case" as my Triumph has an ODB-II style connector but it's NOT ODB-II - just ODB and not much info is available. |

I don't know buddy, had the same question as you. From what I read around my best guess would be VPW Most OBD-II connectors however support all protocols |

I wonder where you read that ... |

Buell protocol is here: http://www.ecmspy.com/eeprom_info.shtml Is it OBD x compatible? I don't know, but if you knew what the OBD protocols were you could compare. ECMSpy for Palm is free and it comes with source code. There would be nothing to stop you using the Palm as the digital dash with comms via Bluetooth or cable. |

I love the idea of a fully featured digital dash on a bike - an important step in closing the gap with car drivers in being distracted from paying attention to other roaduser by staring at utterly irrelevant information I never realised that Buell protocol had anything to do with electronics - if anything, it would be runnung away from it |

As I stated in the opening post... I'm probably talking shite I'm not interested in modifying the data on the eeprom, ECMspy does that very well already. I just wanted to understand what format/protocol the ECM data output is, to figure if one of the cheap ebay OBD scanners would work. |
