For engine, first choice would be HD 20/50, second choice would be Motul 20/50 (we get a discount at Opie Oils).

Yeah, just for the engine (in the swinger). For the tranny I don't use anything other than Formula + (cos I don't know what the alternatives are)...

Just to stoke the fire on a controversial subject....

I've been using this stuff in our X1's and in our Harley's. I obviously haven't done a controlled trial with different oils to see which one's better than the other, but it worked fine. There. 8-)

I also used their primary oil and it's been absolutely fine. Smells almost like the Formula+ stuff from HD. I've also used RevTech oil in the past, and they're obviously a well known brand, so I don't think you can go wrong with that. As long as it's been formulated for Harley's and it's *NOT* car oil, you should be OK.

How true it is, I've no idea, but it's been discussed that some of the things in modern car oils (sulphur + Phosphorous etc ) aren't particulary good for alternator windings and phozzy bronze type bearings :?

But the engine oil doesn't see those, does it :?: We didn't worry before anyone in marketing ever dreamt up motorcycle engine oil did we :?: GTX was just fine then.

My local Ducati guru has told me to use Motul 15/50 Factory Line in my 1198. Before going indy , he used to build motors for John Hacket and said since using the Motul, he's seen hardly any failures in the Desmo cam followers in any of the models. Could be coincidence I suppose :?

.....................and, of course, he sells the stuff lOl

Cam bearings, and in a lot of bikes, they only use one oil for the whole motor. Having said that, my T140 uses cheapo car oil lOl

Of course, I'm being provocative. But as some of you know, I've spent all my working life troubleshooting machines. I have only ever seen one failure in nearly 40 years where the use of an incorrect lubricant was the sole cause of a bearing failure. I've seen hundreds (thousands, perhaps) of failures where there was no lubricant present at all, mind you :!:

It does...! The cam bearings/bushes are phozzy, so is the oil pump drive gear (if you've uprated it. TBH, given that there are soooo many specialist oils avalable for air cooled engines, I wouldn't bother with car engine stuff. All of them are designed for water cooled engines that run under relatively steady conditions. A air cooled Harley has to run under temperature variations that change much more than in a car engine. And the oil has a part to play in cooling the engine, whereas in car engines that is usually not the case (with some exceptions of course...). It's not worth taking the risk, as you won't be saving much money over HD specific oil anyway...

I feel like I unleashed a monster now. Lets see how many people get flamed!! :D
