Greetings fellow buellers.

Here is my dilemma.
The other day I swapped out my transmission oil as per the service recommendations. Just as well I did as the stuff that came out was like cottage cheese. Fresh oil in, recommended amount, all good in da hood. Went to Black Bear today to pick up my oil pressure switch and upon return home I noticed that while IN gear and ticking over and running Betty was making a noise I had not noticed prior to changing the tranny oil. Out of gear all sounded normal.

So here is my retarded thinking. With the cottage cheese in the gearbox, and given the retch worthy consistency when it came out, would that silence the movement of the cogs?

Levels of the new oil are correct as is the oil. What I`m trying to say is, are the gearboxes on these machines notoriously noisy or should she visit a doctor should symptoms persist.

The reason I ask is because I cant remember whether the XB12r I test rode back in 06 had a box that noisy or not :?

Cheers

Marc.

In gear, ticking over + noisy.

Are you at a stand still holding the clutch in?

Could be clutch noise, although the clutches are usually bombproof :? Does it sound like a bearing noise?

Just making sure Marc because you won't be the first to have made the mistake .....
You are aware that the XB's have seperate gearbox oil and engine oil ?
You havn't done what others have done in the past ie drain both and then only refill the swingarm ?
You have used the correct oil in the gearbox after the change ?
If you've done it correctly you should have drained the gearbox oil using the plug underneath the engine and then refilled with a quart of new oil.
If the old oil looked emulsified check that the rubber boot on the clutch cable has small cable ties at each end to prevent water running into gearbox via the cable ;)

Adam. Sounds like a thrust bearing noise, but when its out of gear and ticking over I can pull the clutch and there is no noise either way. Its when I put it into gear the noise starts and does not go away until neutral is selected. Thought the clutch may be dragging and the clutch lever was a bit baggy so I adjusted it. Noise is still there...Seems quiet when the bike is cold. It might be noteable to add I did get a little slip in the clutch today coming back from Black Bear when I was a little hasty changing gears. I hope Ive not damaged the clutch or box :?

Kevmean, yeah did it correctly ta but thanks for the heads up on the rubber boot. I will have a check tomorrow. :yup:

Clutch basket needle race failure is very common on XB's.

Why not get up a bit earlier and go visit Maz on the way to Matlock :?:

He will swap the needle roller out in two shakes of a lamb's tail.

No quite so simple to change yourself BB.......H-D only sell the inner race with the clutch hub (even though it's listed seperately) :?
I keep the inner race as a seperate part but because of the hub design, you cant get a puller on it.......you have to split the race by grinding it and splitting with a chisel
If you're ordering the parts, dont forget the thrust washers.

Oh bollocks. Looks like She will have to go to harley for works then. Im not so confident I can do it and rather than duck it up it would be better if they did it.

Just got off the phone to Harley and they cant touch it due to a worldwide system update and cant order any parts. 2 week without Betty will be painful. :headbang: :headbang:
