Just picked up a really nice S1 but the tank blistered badly. I take it the petrol fumes leak out through the wall of the plastic tank?? Is there a cure prior to repainting??? pet seal etc Been away but back now |

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200777997800? ... 26_rdc%3D1 Paid good money but 4.5k and really good nick thought it was well worth it. Just thought, wonder if modern fuel is too blame if my memory serves me well i think Ducati have a law suit against them in the states due to ethanol levels in fuel?? |

![]() No real answers though, mine blistered after painting by dream machine, they did it again and I think its sorted, if not it'll be an aluminium tank i think. Andy |

I have also read that it is better to give your primer and then your paint ridiculously long cure times... both of which would mean using a spare tank for a while, for long term results. |

To solve the tank acne problem you need to seal the tank with Caswell Epoxy Gas Tank Sealer GTS1750. It protects against the dreaded ethanol too. This stuff costs around £45, it creates a strong protective barrier similar to glass/porcelain on the inside of the tank thus preventing the petrol and fumes from coming into contact with the cheapo plastic tank. Once done you have your tank painted. |

How effective is that stuff on a fairy soft plastic tank on a bike that vibrates alot? I'm thinking it may not be great on a Buell?! ![]() |

J&S race paint (highly regarded bike painters) reckon that what ever sealant you use it will only be effective if you leave the tank to dry for as long as poss in a low temp oven after its been stripped to allow the fuel vapours to escape from the plastic. Even then it will only delay the process. Just sealing the inside will result in crud flaking off the inside and clogging up the fuel system. |
