i grew up using solvol autosol on my norton commando in the seventies,and been using it on the m2 and xb12r but think i read maz calljng it crap.if so whats the alternatives

Snot crap, but you should be ok with Brasso as an alternative.

Autosol is best for harder british ally but softer ally comes up good with Belgom alu
specially jap ally. Not sure where buell ally falls between the two. Hope this helps.

Just had a chat with a mate with an old meridan triumph that has a bare ally tank and seat unit made by the tank shop up scotland an he uses 'autosol aluminium' its less gritty than the standard stuff. He says after a good going over it bends the needle on the glintometer :D

Autoglym metal polish is good stuff ,leaves a wax behind which resists damp.
