Does anyone know the likely import duty/ tax etc on used bike parts from the U.S ? Items generally approx £150 - £200 in value and reasonably small in size .

20% of cost (price plus postage) plus about £15 for Parcel Force to push it through customs, so about an extra £50 for your package.

You don't get charged anything if the declared value is less than £15 (let's call that $20)

I factor in 5% duty, add that to what you have already spent, and then add 20% for VAT - plus of course ParcelFarces "pound of flesh" of £10-£15 to collect the charges ...

If you are lucky enough that it comes as a small packet then you may get away with it ...

...otherwise ParcelFarce are liable to charge you duty on the delivery charge too ...

The duty depends on the commodity code, and can vary greatly, so always best to "agree" on a description with the seller when they are completing their export declaration. Duty is liable on the value of the goods as they arrive at UK entry point, and VAT is liable on the total duty-paid value.
Parcel Force, or any carrier, will only charge the duty assessed by HMRC. As your agent, they have the right to charge you a fee for making the declaration. Only real way round it is to ask the seller to declare it as a gift.

Even then it's no guaranty - not here anyway. Customs aren't THAT dumb. Any suspicion it's a "workaround" and you're screwed.

Thanks for the well informed responses , best to be aware of the additional costs before bidding/ buying, and weigh up whether it's worth it, over perhaps the price of new parts available from dealers here . Cheers.

For a rule of thumb just change the dollar sign to a pound sign, and add a bit :P
