| Post subject: | touring tools |
Hi folks, looking for a bit of experienced advice on what to pack in terms of a TLC package for my M2. i'm hoping to embark on a couple of tours to deepest darkest europe from scotland this year... maybe even as far as Faakersee if i'm feeling brave. any suggestions of essentials beyond a few spanners, keys and jubilee clips? sensible suggestions preferably  hope you can help. |

Take it to Maz  and get it looked at before any long venture, after having my X1 sorted last year went all round spain 2000 miles not a problem. Then another 2000 miles round GB worth the piece of mind.

| ing is good plan (if it's not a verb it should be)... i shall give him a shout. and i already have the other items i think. i'll also pack a leprachaun in one pannier. |

WD40 and Duct tape. If it moves and it shouldn't, Duct tape. If it doesn´t move and it should, WD40. I suspect you´ll need more Duct tape than WD40..... |

| i've been contemplating fitting a large magnet and/or scoop beneath the japanese bike that will be accompanying me on these trips, so they can ride behind me and collect everything that falls off. |

It´s a concept of a fellow called Collin Chapman. He called it "adding lightness"  He built cars to break, and gradually made them stronger until they stopped breaking. So he then knew he hadn´t built them too heavy. He lost some drivers though.... I think he used quite a bit of duct tape. |

I saw the thread title and thought it was about me  Seriously though a tyre plugging kit is one of the most important and for me taking a spare drive belt is more important than tools. I work on the principle that you can normally get access to tools where ever in the world you are but getting something like a drive belt would prove far harder and could end your touring holiday on it's first day. Another important thing is to make sure that anything that might need to be undone for something like a belt change is not seized up so coppaslipped bolts before the trip are well worth the effort. |

Deffo the belt.....Fit a new one and carry the old one as a spare it will be more flexable to fold and store.

Half a dozen of tie wraps are always a good idea, they can be used for absolutely everything. I once fixed the crampons of a German climber on the summit of Mont Blanc with a couple of them. However, that pales into insignificance when you consider the novel uses that Dave from Scotland has for them when he gets bored in the office
