So this winter it's the turn of the frame on my s1W for modifying. It's nearly ready to lift off. The rear footrest loops are for the chop, the redundant oil tank bracket on the back of the battery plate, thats going too, and the missing frame spar is to be welded in. To the people who have done this, what grade tubing have you used. I don't want to use red band seamed pipe, it's shite to weld spitting everywhere, nasty stuff. Any Info or direction greatly received.......DaveH |

I did one for a mate who was tarting up his S1 some years ago. He brought me a section of Renolds 631 that he'd cut out from a rear wheel triangle of a push bike frame He wanted me to braze it in, but not wanting to put a lot of heat into the Buell frame tubing, I decided to Tig it with some mild steel rod. I don't have a tube notcher and it took ages with a half round file getting a precision fit - finding someone with a 'notcher' will make life a lot easier |

I used a half round file on mine and it was TIGged in. Not sure what the spec was but I'll try and find out later. |

Buy this, chop out that bit at the bottom, and be 100% confident that it's the correct gauge... |

Dave, Buell used 4130 CrMo on all 96 and later tube frames, AISI 1018 before that. Can't recall the tubing size but you'll figure it out when you cut into it. |

Even though it's an under-match for 4130, most manufacturers of frames and chassis use ER70S-2 as the frames are typically normalized tubing. NASCAR (Septic left-turn racing) requires it since they mix 4130 and 1018. It's a less liquid weld pool than ER80S-D2 so it's good for vertical and overhead positions and doesn't require post-heat treatment. |

Well the frame was off and in my hands tonight. Christ those isolator cap heads were tight, i nearly burst a blood vessel, and the frame was heavier than i thought considering it's made from chromo, though there is a raft of brackets and gussets. It'll be lighter once the angle grinder's been in action |
