 Post subject: Weeping gasket..

A tiny, bubbling oil weep from the bottom of the rear cylinder on my S1....small but there..
So.. will it torque down, will I snap my studs if I'm ham fisted ?.. should I expect an engine strip for a new one before using the bike this year...and are there any Buell S1 owners/mechanics in the North East with any idea of where this is heading..?

I'm new on here and freely admit that my enthusiasm for spanners is probably greater than my ability to use them efficiently..and my tools are basic at best..

No hurry with the answers... tommorow will be fine.

It won't get better on its own... and I would advise strongly against torqueing it after all those years... It's a common problem and not a massive job to do, but it does need to be done by someone who knows what they're doing AND has the correct tools, so >>>>>>> get it to Maz.

Take the opportunity to look at the oil pump gear.

If you're tool kit is limited but still fancy having a go you need to factor in a basic a/f socket set, a set of a/f allen socket bits, a torque wrench (3/8 drive) a workshop manual, £100 quids worth of gaskets, If you do the oil pump drive gear ( a very good time to do it if it's not been done) That's £80, then you may need an impact wrench as well for the pinion nut unless you remove the primary side and use a locking tool. It's all do-able if your confident. If not ride / van it to dukinfield greater manchester and let Maz do it. He can do this with his eyes shut and one hand tied behind his back :run: You wouldn't be sorry. He'll have you in stitches with his jokes and humour.........Oh sorry that's another Maz i know :D

The problem with torqueing on it more is that since it's been together for so long, the torque required to break the threads into a moveable state is probably 140-150% of the recommended torque value. (You'd simply have to back it off, not tighten it up.) You won't snap the studs but you may stretch the threads in the case and you'll most certainly warp the gasket seating surface. Gasket seating torque values should be adhered to for good reason. That's why so much shit leaks when you get something back from the dealership's ham fisted "techs." The seating surface is no longer flat.

Besides, if the gasket is original, you'll want an updated gasket anyway.
