Something that Maz picked up on the 10,000 mile service of my XB9S a few weeks ago: one of the forks had been incorrectly reassembled. He mentioned that the seal on the other fork (which was assembled correctly) looked a lot older and was possibly the original.

I bought the bike in July 2009 and I haven't had any work done on the forks recently so I dug out all the receipts. Oh dear... Just after I bought it, I dropped it off at the local HD dealership for a service because there was no service history with the bike. The guy on the service desk gave it a quick once over and noticed that one of the fork seals was weeping and suggested it needed replacing and I agreed.

Remember that this was six years ago when Buell was still going and HD was the official distributor and servicing network.

The service receipt shows that I've been charged for two fork seals and two lots of fork oil.

But it appears that only one fork was done and the mechanic managed to reassemble it incorrectly.

In fairness, I can see how I might get charged for two forks - the guy on the service desk totting up the work assumes that 'fork seal replaced' means both when the mechanic meant he just did the one he was told to do. It doesn't excuse getting charged for parts and work that wasn't done but I can see how it might happen.

But reassembling the fork incorrectly ? No excuse.

My understanding is that it was a spacer that has a lip and a specific orientation. It had been installed the wrong way round, i.e. upside down.

No. The closest dealership to Horsham is Guildford.

I had my forks "reconditioned" by the HD dealer in Qatar. A few kms afterwards my front brake didn't work when I pulled up at a junction. Both forks had dumped their oil through the seals. Turned out that when they stripped the forks they found they didn't have the correct size seals in stock, so they put the old ones back in :headbang:
