Been working away in Italy since November, and haven't had chance to use the bike much. But I managed to get into my Bat Cave this morning, and give War Horse some love.
I took her for a quick spin to get her nice and warm, and dropped out her vital fluids.
She's done less than 3000 miles on the oils, but I ran her hard from Mallorca to Isle of man, and back to Southampton last summer, so thought I'd give her some fresh.
Did the engine oil & filter, & dropped out the gear oil.
When I bought the bike, she was a bit of a shitter, but I checked everything out, and did the necessary mods to make her reliable, including fitting an uprated primary chain tensioner, to replace the bodge that certainly would have killed me!
When I dropped the gear oil then, it was black, and stank, and the sump plug looked like this.

This time, it didn't smell so bad, but I was surprised to see how dark it was, and the sump plug had more metal on it than I expected.

Is this normal, or is there something going on here? (first dry sump bike I have owned)

I shone a lamp into it, and couldn't see any sparkly stuff...

Would I be correct in assuming it's dark from the clutch friction material?

Thanks Beef, when I say my first dry sump bike, I was referring to the fact that my jap bikes shared the engine and gear oil, so I expect to see it black.
But as the gearbox on this one is separate from the engine oil, I was surprised to see it come out so dark.
I also expected less metal on the plug.
But if you say this is normal, then all good
The bike certainly runs well, and the gears select nice. I'm certainly not heavy on the clutch. I like to think I have mechanical sympathy. Hence no stink like the first time I dropped it out after I bought it
I thought she was breathing a bit heavy, but I shortened the hoses into the catch can, so it's stopped blowing what bit there was back out of the bottle, and over my leg now She used about half a litre of oil on my IOM trip, and never missed a beat in 1700 miles. It was pretty hot riding up through Spain. the heat from the motor was something else. I should get an oil cooler ordered. I meant to do it last year...
I still fancy pulling the motor apart and having a bit of a fettle though
It'll have to wait until the end of this year though, with the new job.

Now, to sort out the new spanners I found.....

Although you partially stripped the primary etc remember that there is always residual dirty oil lurking on ledges and in recesses when you do an oil change , you will probably find the next change will come out a bit cleaner. Although I normally say use 20/50 mineral oil if you are regularly going to be using in a hot climate then you probably would be better using a good 20/50 synthetic engine oil.

I'm using the Harley 20/50, I don't think these engines would like synthetic oil. If I wasn't using the Harley oil, I'd be using a good quality Diesel engine oil
I'm using the Harley Formula+ in the transmission.

Did you measure the amount of oil that came out of the trans ?......if you still have the original crank seal, they do pass motor oil, especially if your breathers aint up to spec.

i always found the gear change improved with new oil

my X1 has John Deer oil in it (yes really)...same spec as HD funnily enough

I didn't Maz, but it's still in the tray, so I will. I have fitted the XB rocker boxes, and she seems pretty unrestricted in her heavy breathing
