For my '06 12Ss, there are two individuals here in the States to whom one can send a stock exhaust pipe, and they will modify it for more free flow and obviously more sound (quieter than other aftermarket pipes, however). One of them (Odie at Special O.P.S.) keeps the exhaust servo intact, while Randy at Hawk Performance deletes it. Is there a reason why keeping the servo intact and functional in a modified exhaust would be preferable to deleting it and thereby making the can more like any other aftermarket can?

How much is the change in backpressure?

I'm not sure, but I will find out.

My layman's thinking (without all the technical data) was that the servo just seems like such a good idea as a way to accommodate both high end output and low end torque... the idea of having an exhaust system that adjusts (even a little) depending on the requirements of the ride seems worth keeping. Is this at all right? Or is this one of those "it depends..." kind of answers?

Well let me put it this way.

I wired my valve open, before fitting a Remus can, and it made no diff to the low end torque or normal engine running and just made the OEM can sound louder at low revs. The sound was not nice though. A sort of "beans-an-cheese" farting noise so put it back untill I got the Remus can.

I hear tell that the system on the Buell is for sound emissions and not power like the Yamaha
Ex-Up system. Let me know if otherwise.

The other thing is, unless you DIY so cheaper, the work to mod the can and Cam-Coat it might cost you more, or close to it, a S/H SS Remus can. I did me anyway.

Any aftermarket or re-worked OEM can, mostly, will need a fuel adjustment to be 100%. Your 06 bike can use Spy for that unlike the newer bikes.

from American Sportsbike Exhaust "shootout":

Quote:
Special Ops
The Special Ops XB12 muffler is based on the stock pipe like the regular Drummer, but the modifications are decidedly different and it shows up in the curves. The low end and top end responses are similar, with good solid low end performance and a top end response that is a bit off the leaders but as good or better than stock. But from 4000-5200RPM, the XB12 Special Ops pipe makes big power, better than anything except the D&D. The fueling match is to the Race ECM is pretty good overall, but since the Special Ops uses the exhaust servo, a remapped stock ECM is a better choice. As in the XB9, the Special Ops pipe is a bit “blatt-ier” than the Drummer, but the funky resonance that was heard on the XB9 wasn’t there on the XB12.

It's that "blatt-ier," beans'n'cheese issue that has me holding back. The sound difference is a big issue for me, and unless I can hear another bike set up with this, I don't think I'm ready to send away my stock exhaust to go under the knife. After all, there are a good number of things to spend money on with this bike that will help it last longer (FS tensioner, bearings) and really change the ride (tyres) - swapping the OEM pipe isn't as much of a priority (at least until I hear a good one in person that I must have 8-) )

I have heard Tubb's modified cans, and I am pretty sure he takes the valve out. They sound nice if thats any help? :)
