How does it compare to the 9sx, im happy to stick with the 9 and do my own customising with it, but after getting turned down on insurance for a cr because im 22, i can afford the new 12sx.

have heard the 12 lump is not as smooth and fun as the 9.

any helpful hints and tips?

I rode them back to back, and to be honest I could not feel much advantage in the 12, other than it was a bit of a pig in traffic. I am after the 9sx myself, as it seemed a better bike.

When I rode them back to back I couldn't justify the extra £1800 for the 1200 but if price comparable then get the 1200.
