Hi,
just been told by Hannover buell my bike a 2002, XB9R will need a new type oil pump drive gear with a cost of nearly 500.00euro this is on top of my service which itself will be nearly 1000.00 Any one know of what is involved with chainging this and is there any way of knowing wether it's been done already as I can't find my paper work and I know it's had about the same amount of money spent on it 7 years ago?

I thought the XB range already had the new type bronze gear. Whenever, I've replaced the ones in my Tubers, I've just bought a XB drive gear. You can check it for wear by dropping the oil pump.
What reason did the dealer give for wanting to replace the gear. Did they dismantle anything to check it?

Easy job (basically follow Adam's How To for cutting down the cam chest cover), drain the engine oil, rotate the engine (follow ph's how to), rotate the crank to TDC compression on the rear cylinder, whip the rear rocker box off, rotate the engine to TDC compression on the rear cylinder, remove the cam position sensor, remove the cam chest cover, put bike in gear, undo the nut holding the cam pinion gear and oil pump gear (a good idea to make sure the woodruff key is at 12 o'clock), then swap the gears over, put the nut back on with some threadlock and reassemble with new gaskets (and a new seal for the CPS).

Worth doing, there has been at least one guy on here (one with an XB9R) who wrecked his engine when his let go.

There are some theories that the base of the oil pump should be machined to bring the gear centre lines in line with each other, however bear in mind that there is some free play in the oil pump drive shaft and this (IIRC) is lifted when being driven, so it ain't that far off (and is used on Sportsters, XBs and tubers alike).

The 06 and beyond Buell gear is phosphur bronze, Lucky Hands does an alternative which is appears to be sintered and oozes quality compared to the rough finished machined Buell item and is said to be unbreakable.

I will be fitting my Lucky Hands gear this weekend - thanks to my best (on-line) friend.

Hi, they just asked if it had been done! Having not heard anything on it around here thought it was an important thing to get done. And once again thanks MAZ.

If you want to see if yours is worn out, i.e. the teeth are very thin, for the cost of a gasket, you can drop the oil pump and shine a torch up the hole. Best to put some aluminium foil on the shock and a seed tray underneath to catch the oil.

The foil is to protect against the waves emitted by the UFO's, of course!
