Post subject: | New to Buell |
Hi All, I am the proud owner of an XB12X ulysses 2008 which has just turned 2000 miles, 800 of which I have put on in the last 3 weeks. I have been trawling the site and have noticed some items listed as "must haves" to combat Buells little quirks. Such as the FS Tensioner. Is there anything specific or in genreal to my model that I should watch out for, change or just throw in the bin. The bike had just had it's 1000 mile sevice with Provincewide Harley and I had to top up the oil when I bought it with 1200 miles. Would this be normal or has the previous owner fecked it up like he did the suspension settings. Re set the suspension to hand book settings foe me and the wife and seems fine maybe a bit soft but well used to that after coming from a Yamaha XJR1300sp. Any advice appreciated. Cheers all. |

Hello and welcome - great bike. I'm far from the most technical here, but have fitted a FS Tensioner and done oil changes without any difficulty. Be sure to check out the howto section which covers these common jobs. The bike will use a little oil. Make sure you check it immediately after you turn the engine off - like, within 30 seconds if possible - as you won't get an accurate reading after that. Note also the recommended oil change frequency is higher than the user manual suggests. Again, all in the howto section. If the bike feels too hot you may want to consider retro-fitting what Buell called a 'Rider Comfort Kit'. This does a great job of managing the heat the Uly generates so it's more comfortable for the rider. Aside from that, it's a case of ride and enjoy. |

Thanks for the tips. Will definitely check out the how to section. Off to France on Friday so will see how it goes there with the heat. Cheers |

The vin plate and tax book both state that it is a 2008 model. I assume there is a CAT but cannot be 100% sure. Any ideas on where or how I can confirm the CAT. Sorry probably being a bit thick but definitely not the most technically minded. |

Yep 08 bike and think it has a CAT. Needed for the EU market and not fitted to US bikes. Get an FST. Change the engine oil and filter every 2.5k miles and use the same brand. If the bike idles and runs fine without any serious lumpyness leave well alone. |

Does the fan come on, riding from cold, at about 15mph and go off again even if the bike is very hot at stand still. I would also suggest taking a spare belt, the tools to change the belt (can be done on the roadside) and EU breakdown cover if you are going on a tour anytime soon. Also do a fresh engine oil/filter change, take 1L of spare oil and dont thrash/load the engine untill it gets past 4000 miles on the clock as it is still running in. Better still leave it to 6000 miles. |

At the risk of being a bit of a pedant, if it's EXACTLY the same - ie. black - then it would be an 09 or a 10 model. The 08 had the same shaped cover, but was goldish coloured. Enjoy France - I'm jealous. |

oppps might have problem with the no thrashing thing ... Head off this Friday so getting a belt might be an issue. Anyway be a tad fecked off if the belt went with only 2000 mile on the clock. Got me EU bike cover and travel insurance etc. I have heard others talk about the fan. Mine appears to come on randomly but never noticed it from cold. It does stay on for quite a while after I stop the engine. At a stand still the fan does come on but only for a short minute. |
