My old speedo cable (on S1WL) has snapped at the front wheel end the last 15mm of the square inner is stuck inside the drive unit and I cant get it out. Do I have to take out the front wheel in order to remove the drive unit and tap it out of the drive unit or is there an easier way, I have tried the little grub screw to no avail,

Try a magnet first, if that fails it's a wheel out job. Grease the drive before reassembly, whole job half an hour tops. I'll race you Saturday morning (I am doing mine) again.
