So I took the plunge and tried amsoil, hard stuff to find here in Santa rosa, ca. When I drained my primary, I had discoloration of oil ( milky and metal flake) that made me sad... But I flushed my primary with one quart, quick trip around the block on fresh oil, then drained again and it looked much better, so I called it good and finished up the rest of the service, clutch adjustment for personal preference and whatnot. Wow what a difference! It shifts so much smoother, but I did not notice any " cooler operating temperatures" as advertised by my amsoil salesman. Also the man suggested I run the oil longer than 3000 miles, only change the filter at the normal oil change interval... Sounds bad to me, anybody on here tried it? Anything special I should be doing/looking for since my primary oil was in such a sorry state? I'm no mechanic, but I bought a "Bull" so I'm learning slowly but surely! Btw, the forum is in my top 5 websites visited on a regular basis. You guys rock! Thanks for all the advice, and a special thanks for all the laughs reading thru the posts. You European folks got a hilarious sense of humor! |

I used to use Amsoil in tuned Golf GTIs ((Rabbits over there) and found it good stuff, Gearbox much slicker but this was proper gear oil rather than 20/50. Not sure how would work in motorcycle wet clutch system and even if you should be using 20/50 in both engine and transmission anyway. |

Not sure about Amsoil, but Mobil 1 V-Twin is suitable for both engine and gearbox/primary use. You need to make sure that any primary oil used is suitable for wet clutches as some synthetics in particular are not good and will make the clutch slip. |

The rep was very keen on the idea of using it on both the primary and the main hold. And it does say that it is suitable for both on the jug... That sold me on the idea. But I like confirmation on these things. |

I'm sure the oil will be fine after 3k miles, but you must take into account the by products of combustion and other crap it will be carrying in suspension, incl the stuff that's too small to be trapped in the filter. You must do what you're happiest with. Much more inportantly, ignore the torque settings for the drain plugs in the manual, 15-18 ft/lb is plenty if you want to avoid a helicoil scenario |

The full syn Amsoil I am using (forget the grade) is ok for use in wet clutch applications, the Amsoil web site has a pretty good multi oil lab test report which makes very good reading, worth downloading. even though the recommended oil change was at least 3000 miles the oil and filter are changed every 1000 miles, by buying the oil in bulk I got quite a good deal from the UK importer. |
