How much do I need to spend to get a decent improvement over my stock suspension? My shock is only on 6k miles so isn't worn out - just looking for a high quality rebuildable shock for street use. I see people seem to swear by AST for the tube framed ones and they do make them for the XB - about £600 How about Hagon (£250) or Maxton? I see Ohlins do them but can't imagine that is cheap. I imagine I'll be doing the 10k service on the bike this year so will get new fork internals then. Also, it's an STT, using the long frame and swingarm? Will that limit what I can use? |

Why not send it in for a service? I had my forks serviced at a specialized shop last year. I told them my weight and how I like to ride and they did a good job, so I'm thinking to get my spare shock done this year. |

I did not send the forks in because they were worn, but to have them adjusted to my needs. My favourite damping is now set to a middle position, instead to a 5/6 position before. Breakeaway force is noticeably reduced, so the bike feels a bit unbalanced with the stock shocks, which is why I will have these serviced too. Back to third party shocks: the cheapest Wilbers, offering adjustable rebound and compression damping is Type 631 Competition at 630 €. Hagon (Wilbers' "cheapo" product line) do not offer any adjustment at all and are meant to be used for stereo shock chassis, not monoshock layouts. White Power 4014 Fusion (no adjustable compression damping with Emulsion models) are 800 €, and I dare not to tell you what to pay for a Öhlins S36PR1C1L. Ronny might throw in some prices too, but I doubt, they would differ much. |
